Just as the title says, ive been offered a car thats uk reg and has been in the country for at least a year. Vrt is apparently 1k. Just wondering what the story would be with the vrt. Would they say anything about the car being in the country for so long without getting Irish plates? Ive heard something about having 30 days to register it once its been imported.
Here a link to the car https://www.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/honda-civic-type-s-gt/21369839

You know it’s €4499 for the car and not €499?

    It’s also not 149bhp

And VRT is €1263 plus whatever penalties.

Yeah hes offering me a swap and some cash my way for a 2010 Mazda 3 diesel, 140hp to my knowledge. Penalties as in for keeping the car unregistered for too long? If i text the reg to 57252 it gives me the vrt as 975 quid

I wonder would it be possible to send it back to the UK and buy it from there and then import it.
As far as I know it is not legal to keep a car in Ireland that long with registering it.
    No green light check

That does seem like a plausible loophole, a bit messy however having to ship and register the car back and forth.
Would it be possible to appeal it? Just mention that the car was purchased here and that it wasnt myself who actually brought it over here.

Hmm.. I always thought that, like back tax, the VRT was reset when the car changed ownership.

But why would you want to deal with someone who puts a misleading price on the car, lies about the VRT amount, lies about the bhp of the car and has the car in the country for a year without paying the tax due on it?

Everything else aside, who wants to do business with someone like that?

Might be possible just dive it to northern Ireland and buy it there.

Thats why i decided to ask here in the forums. I wasn't sure if the vrt reset like the tax system or if the penalties stuck. Perhaps he got stung and is now trying to pass the problem onto someone else. My guess is he put the price at that because donedeal had a promotion where you could upload an ad under €1000 without charge.
But yeah looks like ill just play it safe and stay away

    Indeed.
I think customs could class it as a smuggled car. custom can confiscation of smuggled cars.

I wonder has that car already been inspected for VRT but not paid and now is outside the 30 days?

It should also be noted that the UK reg shows that the car had 67000 miles on it when it last passed it's MOT 2 years ago according to the UK MOT check website.

It does seem like its a bit too good to be true. He could easily ask for around 5.5k for that car if he puts it through vrt. Like im selling mine for 4k and hes offering me his car and 300 my way. According to him you can go and get a form from the guards stating that the vehicle wasnt driven in ireland and therefore be exempt from the penalties...

The person selling is not allowed to sell a UK registered in Ireland unless they are a registered dealer. And they have to vrt it before you buy it!

Run a mile if that's not the case

Cheers for the advice guys! Gonna stay clear and just sell my car instead of doing swaps and px with dodgy characters

On top of that type S is kind of crap and that particular one looks like a shed.

Type S GT is good enough spec, but to be fair all it has over the ES is the colour coded bits and 17” rather than 16” wheels.
I saw one today 2010 CE reg, also a uk import, also red - it was gorgeous.

Incidentally, Civic hatch prices have exploded again. Here and in the UK.

They could be selling UK reg cars located in northern Ireland, just advertising in South. That would be allowed.

With southern locations and phone numbers listed in the adverts? Do you honestly believe that the majority of these sellers are in the North?

Reality is that what is illegal on paper and what is actually enforced by law are two vastly different things, especially in this country.
