Gearbox from a breaker

A colleague was asking me about replacing the gearbox in his Punto. I believe the box is not overly common to fail but it's got some noisey bearings and he was trying to enlist me to replace it with him - we'd both be interested in the exercise.

However, what can I really expect from a breaker box? I presume realistically, it would be up to us to test it and what good would it be if the new box was as noisey as the original. What recourse would a couple of DIYers have?

Is it possible or common for breakers to test these and guarantee them?

Its usually pretty simple, you fit the 'new' box and if it is no good you take it out and give it back for another or a refund. They wont entertain any compensation for lost time or effort fitting etc

Would they ever quibble about refunding the cash?

Depends on the breakers, if they have another box you will be getting that first usually. If you have a good relationship with them its easier. Testing wise though very little is done beyond making sure it hasnt a large hole in it....

Mk2 Punto boxes are fairly ok. Grande Punto boxes are weak though and take an unusual grade of oil that's hard to get, and which you need to use.
