    Hi guys.
Anyone have a rough price Inc labour for tie rod either replacement and service or just repair. Looks like mine became unthreaded which is really bloody weird but ended up limping the car to park and now both wheels are facing inwards. Flat bed coming to pick.it up but just looking for a rough price

That is a strange one. Did the tie rod end split or something?

Anyway, I’d get both inner tie rod and tie rod end replaced to be sure. You’re probably looking at around 120 supply and fit for both and then 30-50 quid to track the car after parts replaced.

When was your tracking last done?

Tracking and Blue Ford service done about a month ago in a Ford Garage.

They may have forgotten to tighten the locknut

I really hope that's all that that is. I'll expect very lil charge and realignment if that's the case.

Even if thats what happened id still be replacing the whole track rod. Were you moving when it let go? There could be more damage done

Yeah I'd say there was about a mile travelled very slowly to get me and the car to a safe spot. Let go at speed. Although I think back I may have felt it earlier at a lower speed. I can't be sure.

You would have also been driving with toe in so check your tyres for uneven wear. Did the tie rod threads strip or just screw out.

I can't get a good look at it when I was at the car. The threads on the tie rod seem intact and full, so it certainly, at least feels like it would if it had just unscrewed......which freaks me out a bit.

I wont know till tomorrow as car will only get to the garage today.

Are there still threads in the track rod end? it looks totally stripped in that photo, should be good threads right to the end

Hard to say from photos of course! Id bring it back to where did the tracking and go from there, and check the other side :)

    Thanks.
Garage came back saying its snapped.
If that's the case so be it but then begs the question of why it wssnt noticed during the very recent service. Either way some serious questions to be addressed.

The pic of the inside of the tie rod is completely shot. Expanded rust and minimal thread whatsoever. Severe corrosion.

The end of the thread on the rod itself has been chewed to death as well by rust. The photos zoomed in says it all. Corrosion caused this to fail.

Very hard to put a blame on anyone here as rust is the culpret, however occurred. External view would leave no indication to the mess inside that rod end.

There isn't 0.3mm on the rod end or bar thread.

Given the quality of the pictures in post #12, I have very serious doubts about the diagnosis of "snapped", as there is no evidence of a broken piece in the track rod end, and the location of the lock nut on the shaft looks very much like the sort of position it should have been in for the end to be set correctly.

As to how the 2 have parted company with each other, to coin the famous phrase, "that's beyond my pay grade", without looking at the parts involved very closely, it's going to be hard to work out the exact "why" or "how".

What is clear is that for safety, the entire track rod and ends needs to be replaced.

Shore, if it was easy, everybody would be doin it.😁

As Irish Steve says, it's very difficult without seeing the items and having them to hand, but zooming in on even on the inner tie rod photo, it almost looks like that wasn't even in the outer thread, going on the shallow depth of thread, and what seems like tons of dirt "in" the threads on top!

Nearly looks like it was backed fully out of the nut/outer thread and was liable to pull out at any time!

Scary stuff. Glad it didn't lead to anything more serious

It's simple enough. The numpty who did the tracking recently, opened the locknut and started turning the shaft to make an adjustment, didn't bother his hole giving it a spray with penetrating fluid and stripped the thread clean out of the track rod end. He then covered it up as best he could and let the car out to you. You could have been killed, there are definitely some serious questions to be answered.

If the locknut was not tightened and the tie rod backed out over time, it would have been noticeable in the steering wheel being increasingly more left of centre when driving straight

Exactly. I think it was hanging on by a whisker and then gave way pulling straight out of the track rod end.

Pls let us know the cost of repair for future information, unlucky, but could have been a whole lot worse

Ill keep everyone updated and the cost is about €320. However Im not exactly going to just hand over money in this case.
I would need more that a "oh well we will fix it and charge you" response.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,619 ✭✭✭CoBo55

Are you sure there's isn't a broken piece left behind in the track rod end, if not, 320 is crazy money for just a track rod end.

I'm confused, the garage are looking for a further 320 to replace both the inner and outer tre plus a service? I thought it had been serviced and tracked a few months ago.
