    Hi,
I'm 24 years old currently doing a masters degree in college and looking for part-time work but haven't got anywhere, despite numerous applications. My mum said i could apply for a medical card and maybe some help with money since I haven't been able to find a job. Can i even if i'm still living at home with my parents and in college? Am i missing a trick here? Never signed up for any welfare benefits before.

    Hi there,

As far as I know you can get a medical card while your in college but you wouldnt be entitled to any state benefits while studying.

    Hi.

For someone aged 16-25 in college, you would be deemed financially dependent on a parent if your weekly income is less than €164.

This means if your income is less than €164 per week, your parent needs to have a medical card on a financial basis in order for you to get one.

So if your sole income is SUSI grant for example then your parent needs to have a medical card for you to get one because SUSI is a non assessable income.

If you are earning over €164 in a part time job then you are deemed independent but you will not get a medical card but you will get a GP visit card if your wages are below around €220 per week.

    Apply online mymedicalcard.ie very straightforward.
