Be careful, I think over 35% is (or should be) an NCT fail.

My daughter is 21 with a full licence for the last three years with the same insurance company.

She bought a Mini this year and when changing over the policy and giving details the insurance company asked were the windows tinted.
She said NO, as they weren't.
They told her that if she intends to tint them, which they said was popular with Mini's, that she would have to send in a cert from an approved installer stating that the tint was installed correctly and meets legal requirements.

Do you have a meter to measure the current visible light transmission of the windows? They may not allow 100% as fitted from factory, limiting the level of additional tint possible while remaining legal.

If you might be using the car outside Ireland (NI, UK or mainland Europe) some countries visible light transmission limit requirement is higher than Ireland's.

I don't know what the possible consequences of driving a car in NI or UK which has a tint that is legal in Ireland but fails NI / UK stricter limits. Worst case you could end up with a prohibition notice preventing the car being driven in NI / UK and needing to be trailered or have the tint removed to get it home.

If doing it yourself you would want to be able to check visible light transmission before and after applying the tint and make sure you comply with the legislation in any country the car might be used.

Also see J.R.'s post about certification for insurance purposes. You would also be obliged to notify your insurer of any modification (such as tinting) to the factory specification. This might impact your premium or availablr choice of insurers.

Thats only for the front windows..
Back windows are Ok and pass NCT.

Light transmission on the front windows must be over 65% so its not really worth while doing it.

Op, its not as easy as it sounds doing it yourself, keeping the area dirt free and cutting the tint to the right shape is tough, also harder if the windows roll down.

I got the 7 back windows done for €170.

Are there any places that have the meter used by the NCT? I want to tint my windows but dislike the van look. So I need to find somewhere that can measure the factory tint to see if I can get them all done.

Can buy the pre cut tints on ebay. Very easy to apply once you look at a few youtube videos

100% sure all places that offer window tints have this tool.

I did my car myself - but purely because I wanted to learn as opposed to saving money. In the end, between buying the tint and basic tools and a heat gun, it was about €100 or so.

I personally can't justify paying someone €200-300 for something I really wanted to try (and did) myself, but I have a newfound respect for people who can do it well. It really is a tricky job, which is very difficult to get just right.

If you value your time at all, and just want the job to be completed as opposed to learning it yourself, I would really recommend just leaving it to the professionals.

Just used Dublin Tint today on my jimny. €110 for the back windows at 5% (darkest) tint. Very professional and a top class job, highly recommended.

Got the rear of a 520 Touring done two weeks ago in WeTint, on the Longmile Road. 35% tint with heat and UV protection was €230 altogether.

Cheaper film with just tint and no protection would have been €140 altogether.

Very good job and very happy with it and the service.
