New tyres - warning light won't go off

    Hi all,

A few weeks ago I got 4 new tyres.

The pressure warning light for the tyres will not go off.

My friend told me that this always happens with new tyres and it will go away.

However, as it has been a few weeks I really think it should be gone now.

Whenever I check the pressure all seems fine.

Any ideas on how to get the light off?

    What car is it?
What PSI should it be according to the plate in the doorjamb?
What PSI did you put into the tyres?

What car is it? Sometime you need to reset the Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) when you get new tyres.

    It's a 2007 BMW 318D.

I am not sure the correct PSI. I will double check. When I last checked three of the tyres were about 30-31, and one of the tyres was at 34.

The correct pressures will be listed at the bottom of the B pillar on the drivers side.

Not sure if this is relevant for your exact model but worth checking.

Resetting BMW Tyre Pressure Monitoring Systems (TPMS)
Below are instructions for resetting BMW TPMS both with and without the iDrive system.

Resetting BMW TPMS with iDrive system
Follow these simple steps to reset the BMW TPMS with the iDrive system:

Check all tyre pressures are set to the manufacturer’s recommended settings
Car must be stationary with ignition on
Use the I-drive system to select ‘VEHICLE’
    Now choose ‘SETTINGS’
    Click on ‘TPM’
    Click on ‘RESET’
    Your system is now reset
Resetting BMW TPMS without iDrive system

Follow these simple steps to reset the BMW TPMS without the iDrive system:

Check all tyre pressures are set to the manufacturer’s recommended settings
Use the indicator stalk to scroll down until you see the tyre symbol and ‘RESET’
Press the BC button on the end of the indicator stalk
    The display with show ‘RESETTING’
Press and hold the BC button
The Tyre Pressure Warning light will stay on temporarily but this will disappear after two miles of driving

Don't know about your car, but many just report a change in pressure, so basically when you reset the monitor it warns you if tyres change from pressure it was at when you last reset it.

A quick Google got me this.

Might not be your exact car, but it's the type of thing you are looking for.

Any time you fit new tyres or even pump up the existing tyres you need to reset the tyre pressure monitoring system.

not in a BMW of that era. TPMS only needs to be reset if it is triggered

I had a BMW the same as the OP's at one time and I do remember having to reset the TPMS system when I had new tyres fitted.

I thought when working correctly they only gave warning when pressure fell to low 20's PSI and putting air above this in them was fine.

    Wrong.
Return to where you bought the tyres and ask them to set the pressures properly and reset the TPMS system. It is possible if they can't reset the system.they may have damaged one or more of the tyre sensors. Can't believe tyre centres are letting cars out like that.
You wouldnt accept your car back from a service with the engine light on.

The reset thing worked - thanks all.

I don't doubt you but did you have to do it every time? Was the TPMS triggered immediately or did it only come on after driving a few km?
I've only ever had to reset it once on my car after changing a single tyre and it was not triggered until I'd driven 4 or 5km. Other than that, changing tyres (in pairs or full sets) has never caused it to trigger.

If a TPMS uses pressure sensors in the wheels, then I'd expect to have to reset the system every time the tyres are changed. The TPMS in my car does not. I suspect all BMWs of that era are the same but I'm open to correction.

Won't go away without being reset

It was a few miles down the road to my recollection. Pretty much the same as on my current 4 year old 5 Series.
