Re-joining Civil Service

    Settle an argument here folks........

My wife, who is in the private sector, has a colleague that was in the Civil Service approx 20 years ago. This colleague left the CS when she had kids about 20 years ago.

She said to my wife that if she leaves her current, private sector, job she'll just return to the CS and resume at her previous grade and salary.

My wife said this can't be true and I'd tend to agree.

Can someone that left the CS years ago, and was obviously on the old CS contract, just re-join.

    I reckon she'd even have to re-apply through publicjobs.ie

Who's correct - my wife or her colleague?

I am trying to rejoin after 15 years. I have had to reapply through public jobs, however I am hoping to retain my service.

She probably left on a career break but I think the max is 5 years.

She'd have to reapply and start at the first point on the salary scale.

Don't know if it's the same as Cs but partner was in the hse for 3 years and left about 9 years ago, joined a section 38 company (Public sector) last year and started her on the same scale as she left the hse on as well as re joining pension scheme. She had to apply and interview though.

If she goes back at the same grade she wont have to start at the bottom of the scale. She wont be considered a New Entrant.

"Public servants (using the definition set out in the Financial Emergency Measures in the Public Interest Act, 2009) who have been in permanent or temporary employment in the Public Service on or before the 31st December 2010 will not generally be regarded as new appointees. However, this exclusion only applies where the person is being recruited to the same or an analogous grade, role or position as their previous public service employment, whether that employment was permanent or temporary."

I assume she'd have to apply and sit through exams etc?
