Sorry if in wrong place.....so sliding patio door is gone. Had someone look at it and basically says it needs replacing as can't be repaired.

So I am looking for ballpark figure to replace.
Happy to take second hand if I could get them.
So maybe idea of cost to fit separately as well.
    Cost main driving factor here.

    thanks

    Locking mechanism apparently. Won't open.

So its locked shut and the guy who looked at it couldn't open it and said it needs to be replaced. Who was the guy that looked at it? was it a locksmith?

What is happening? The cylinder not turning? Or cylinder turning and nothing happening inside?

If its the former, you may be able to break the cylinder and manually turn the locking mechanism.

You basically need to somehow open it before you can say it definitely needs to be replaced.

Fair point. So am I looking at a lock smith or a door expert ? (apologies if these are stupid questions but I have no clue)
And the next concern would be if they do manage to open it by breaking it for example is there a concern about security if they can't close it on the day ?

Now, I was just looking for clarification there - I didn't mean to sound snarky...

But yeah I would have thought a locksmith first - but dont want you throwing good money after bad if the guy you already got was a locksmith?

    What is happening currently?
Does the cylinder turn at all? It may just need to be replaced. They are easy to replace once the door is open. They can also be easy to break open. (google "breaking into a euro cylinder" or euro cylinder snapping or bumping)

If the internal locking mechanism is bust, then I couldn't comment on that - don't know how easy/cost effective it is to replace that without damaging the door.

We need a bit more here, is the key working in the lock?
    is the black lever working?
is the door fully closed to make sure no pressure on the lever mechanism?

Key turns fine. Black lever is not moving.
I am away at the moment so can't double check re pressure but fairly sure it was pushed closed as much as possible to ensure no pressure put on

I got a guy who works as the door doctor or before to fix similar. He was sound, quick, clean and reasonably priced from what I remember.
Not sure if allowed to post number, please remove of not
    -snip-

I have no connection to the guy

I'd be amazed if that couldn't be sorted in an hour!

Does the guy who told you that you need a new door, happen to sell doors?:D

Anyone who fits or repairs windows and doors will be able to sort that for you, probably end up costing 20 - 30 quid for parts plus whatever for labour. 100 quid tops I'd say.

To be fair to him now he doesn't. But ya I'm all for a second opinion to be sure as funds are tight.
