Biko - would you have any advice on this?:

Recently failed the smoke test on my 1.6 diesel Peugeot. They said it gave a reading of 9.99. brought it back to my mechanic and he went over it and said there was nothing wrong, he booked me into the doe test centre and they passed it. I brought back to the nct centre and they failed it again on 6.99. Brought it back to the mechanic and he went over it again, we then booked into a VW garage in wexford and they tested it and passed it. I don't know what to do I wanted to sell the car as I bought another, can I appeal the nct decision or just keep trying to get it passed. I don't understand how they can give readings like 9.99 and then to 6.99 within a few days when nothing has been done to the car. Any advice would be appreciated

What have you done to try and get the car through? Mehanic sounds useless, there's clearly something wrong, the NCT aren't failing you for sport.

It sounds like a new fuel filter, a bottle of dipetane and long motorway drive might see you through.

Does the car do a lot of local driving?

Can Dipetane be used in a car with a dpf, any benefit from using it?

That's why I'd be worried about using it in a car with a dpf, could all the crap that gets loosened up block the dpf?

He is an excellent mechanic and did the same as he did last year, cleaned it out with dipetane and changed the filters. When i rang him to say the reading was 9.99 he said that the reading cant be right. He checked everything and thats why we went to the doe centre, their reading was the equivalent of 1.79. I went straight to nct centre and they tested it on the same machine and got a reading of 6.99. The vw garage got a reading of 1.25. How come the independant readings are a lot closer than the nct readings.

I had the same car and the same problems, dipetane and a hard drive on the motorway cleared the sh1t out and it passed no problem, I was told at the time driving like a miss daisy is the cause of it
I think I had it in third gear doing around the 100kph mark the revs were up and the black stuff that came out was like the morning after a feed of Guinness

Why would you do that? From 4th gear up and over 60kmh for a decent stretch should help most cars regenerate their dpfs.
