No power coming through to ignition.

Friends car wouldn't start yesterday. Called breakdown service, charged battery, car started, breakdown guy diagnosed alternator issue.

Got home OK in the end. They charged up the battery last night fully. Tried car today and no power coming to the ignition despite battery being fully charged. The fob is not stuck in the ignition due to no power coking through.

So battery is fully charged, but no power coming through anywhere, lights won't even come on.

Car is a 2007 Land rover Freelander 2, Diesel.

They're currently waiting on breakdown service again.

Anyone might have any ideas as to what the problem might be in the meantime?

Have you tested the battery with a voltmeter to determine if it is indeed fully charged? What do you mean when you say "they charged up the battery last night"? Surely the battery would be charged after the drive home.

If I had to guess I'd say it is an alternator issue... but hard to know. I presume nothing at all happens when you turn the key?

If there is a parasitic drain, then the battery could very well have gone flat.
Or if there is indeed an alternator issue the battery was not recharged as you were driving along and actually is flat again.

Car was brought to a garage earlier, the earth cable going to body of the car was cleaned up and power came back to the car. The earth post was hot to the touch.

Garage is going to put an extra earth strap from the battery to the body.

The voltage of the alternator is 12 volts, garage said it should be 13 volts, but otherwise OK.

If the Alt. output is only 12v then it will never be able to charge the battery.
    You need a new alternator.

Interesting, thanks for that. I'll pass the word on.

+1 This. My battery died pretty quickly in my 159, alternator showing 13.7v when it was charged, but battery not charging consistently. Removing both earth straps, sanding surfaces (which had a lot of corrosion) sorted it. That was 18 months ago, still good.
