Hi all, I got a quick question in relation to the RAS. What is the main difference between this scheme and the RAS?

Also do I have to find the house myself under this scheme or does the local authority hunt down a landlord and then make a mutual agreement between us?

Is there a limit to the rent? As in, say the house I or they find, it's say, 1000 euros a month, will they pay the full 1000?

And lastly, do children over the age of 18 who are living with me count or no?

    Thanks.

P.S, I tried contacting my local authority but no one picks up the damn phone. I've tried so many times and at the moment I don't have a car to go directly to them, so, apology for asking so many of the questions here.

RAS is being phased out, some Councils tend to only give it for short term housing support now.

Give citizens information a call and they'll answer all your questions.

Right now if your not in a position to pay your own rent, you have to apply to be added to your local authority housing list.
Every local authority has an application on its website so just go online and print it out and fill it in and post it into them with all the attachments they request.
Inclusion on the housing list is means tested and yes, all over 18s living with you are means tested.
If you are successful in being added to the housing list then you will be offered HAP.
No your local authority will not look for a place for you.
Your contribution to your weekly rent will be set according to your financial situation and your family circumstances and the rent limits for your area.
Here’s how the rent is calculated in Tipp

    Calculation of Rent
The rents of dwellings let on differential rent will be calculated as follows:
o €20.00 rent for the first €200 of the net weekly income plus €0.20 per euro thereafter in
    respect of all dwellings
o A deduction of €2.30 will be allowed in respect of each child under the age of 16 years, or
who being less than 21 years, is attending a full-time course of education and is wholly or
mainly maintained by the principal earner.
o After the rent payable in respect of the principal earner has been determined, 10% of the
income of each subsidiary earner shall be added, subject to a maximum contribution of
    €40.00 by each subsidiary earner.
o The amount of rent calculated in this way shall not exceed the maximum rent referred to in
paragraph 6, or be less than the minimum rent set out in paragraph 7.
The above also applies to the determination of rent contribution of dwellings let under the Rental Accommodation Scheme and the long-term leasing scheme.
Say you are a lone parent in Tipp with 2 kids going to school, and your only income is lone parent payment so your weekly income is €271.
Say The place you are renting is €650 per month.
The rent limit for Tipp for a lone parent with 2 kids is €560.
Your contribution to rent will be €55 per week +€90 per month.
That’s because Tipp coco will only contribute €74 per week to bring it to the €560 rent limit.
In other words if you rent a place that is outside the limits then you will be paying the excess, not Tipp coco.

I'm in the process of getting separated and have to move out of the family home after Christmas. My wife will be paying the mortgage but I'm stuck with a lot of loans the equivalent of a mortgage and also to pay maintenance. I earn 31k but when you take my outgoings away I would come out with €250 a week. No way I could privately rent a decent place that I could bring my boy at weekends who is two and feed and put clothes on my back. What are my options?
