Hi I started a new job a few months ago and gave up half rate carers allowance. I was advised not to as the family member i was caring for was not doing great. I had thought all would be ok and that i could get relatives to check in on him etc as i had spent years caring for him. A job came along and i thought ok, ill give it a go. Fast forward 5 months and im regretting this decision. The family member is still the same and not as i had thought doing any better. I will now have to give up work to care for him again. I am sick over it all. Will it be difficult for me to get the carers allowance again or will they reinstate it quicker knowing i was on it for a long period. God its all a mess. Can anyone help or advise me?

Have you tried calling citizens information to ask their advice?

I hope it works out for you. I can only imagine how stressful the situation is. I work in home help and understand who distressing it can be to look after a family member full time

Thank you so much. It is very stressful. I have made a huge mistake. The thought of trying to gather a whole lot of documents and waiting months for something i had for years is just so scary. Why did i take the god damn job.

Try not to get yourself worked up, these things happen. It's hard to out your life on hold and fair play to you for at least trying. Call about it in the morning and see what they say.

Best of luck! I hope it all works out

Not wanting to worry you even more than you are already. but I would assume you will have to start from scratch. But that is only my feeling go to your CA office and they will be able to tell you more

It's possible your claim is in 'suspended' status like they do with jobseekers claims for up to 6 months on the person getting fulltime employment.
You really should call the Carers Allowance section directly in relation to your claim as soon as you can as you might be able to reactivate it.

Not certain on this though, I dont know the regulations regarding carers as well as I do for jobseekers claims.

I would ring the carers dept first thing on Monday and explain the situation and see what they say

You need to reapply by sending in a new application form.

Well to update, I called into citizens advice and they seem as baffled as myself. It looks as though ill have to reapply again. My gp has told me that i shouldnt have returned to full time work in the first place as this was bound to happen. I was just trying to better myself and try to increase funds for my children. I have no luck really. If I make a new application i'm just hoping i wont be put through the ringer like i was years ago when i applied. It took over a year and a half and an oral hearing to get it the first time round. Guess i'm just sick to my stomach that ill probably have that battle again ahead of me. Thanks for all your replies.

Could you try getting in touch with http://familycarers.ie

It’s a membership based organisation but they may be able to give you advice.

I saw this on their website:

Family Carers Ireland offers a free personal advocacy service to family carers. A member of our organisation can accompany you and assist you in dealing with enquiries, appeals and other appointments with health or social service professionals. If you feel you would benefit from this service.
