Hi folks. Two years ago I bought a red 2014 mercedes estate off a non Mercedes dealer in Dublin. In the last few months the lacquer has started to peel off the bonnet, the roof and several different places. I went back to the dealer and he said there is nothing he will do. The car looks terrible. I'm looking for advice om what to do. Many thanks, Jim,

Any damage / stone chips in area?

Do Mercedes have a paint warranty, and will it only apply to the original car's purchaser?

Many manufacturers have a paint warranty.

Other than that, you might just need to have it lacquered again somewhere. Mightn't cost too much if it's just the bonnet?

You cant just re lacquer a panel, needs complete repainting

Thanks for the info folks. No paint warranty as the car is 5 years old. The lacquer coming off is definitely not from stone chipping either. Huge patches coming off. We have a 2006 Beetle and the lacquer is perfect on it. Im really disappointed with a Mercedes car to go like this...

Can you post some pictures? Whenever I hear of things like this I think of a bad repair after a crash, and the new lacquer/paint pealing. But it seems like your issue is all over the place, so maybe this is unlikely.

Plenty of problems with peeling laquer on red mercs. It’s pretty horrific.

With a full service history (main dealer or independents) and no previous bodywork, a main dealer should be able to help.

Get in to a main dealer on Monday and get the ball rolling.

Roof, bonnet and several other places should rule out a crash, but yeah I'd like to see some pictures too.

Red can be a bit of an problematic colour in some makes. Some tend to fade badly ending up a pink colour. I know toyota had problems with refs some years ago.

Don't mind the warranty. This is in addition to your statutory rights and in this case is a red herring. The car wasn't of merchandisable quality when you bought it. Paint should not be coming off a car after 4-5 years. Sale of goods act trumps time limits on warranties every time.

I'd be heading off to the small clam court with a claim against the dealer and also inviting and copying members of the press (including boards) and Mercedes Benz with images all the documents.

The last thing a prestigious brand like mercedes want is someone bad mouthing their product all over the place in front of a large audience. leaves a nasty taste in the mouth of prospective purchasers.

    A load of rubbish.

First port of call is a main dealer.

Assuming you get no joy with the dealer or small claims, you can get a partial respray, buff and clear coat cheaply. I dinged the front nearside panel and some of the bonnet on one of my cars, did the prep myself and gave it to A Man (PK Paint) in d10, he brought back both panels to absolutely perfect for €300. https://twitter.com/simoncarrolltw/status/845187425051668480?s=21

Contract is with dealer, not MB. Therefore they, not MB, are responsible to you.

From the Consumers Association of Ireland website:

Under the Sale of Goods and Supply of Services Act 1980, anything you buy from a retailer must be:

    of merchantable quality

fit for its normal purpose, and reasonably durable....

..... If your purchase turns out to be faulty, the retailer, not the manufacturer, is responsible to you and must sort out your complaint. You are entitled to a refund, a replacement or a repair.

You'd swear nobody else had studied commerce in secondary school in the last 25+ years. There was a time when being able to rattle off the Sales of Goods and Supply of Service Act, 1980 was something that made one appear educated. Today, we're all familiar with it.

Mercedes are helpful in most cases in addressing this particular issue. The best people to make representations are the main dealers for the brand in Ireland. If the OP wants to have the best chance of having it resolved without hassle, that's where to go first.

A friend of mine has a red 2012 C class which developed moisture spots under the paint. Mercedes covered a full respray of the car last month. The car was a UK import & not bought through an MB dealer and they still covered it.

That is pretty amazing really. Fair play to them.

my ****3 bag skoda did this from new , they blamed stone chips , which it wasnt , i had to end up paying a third of the cost on a f*cking new car to get it resprayed .

so i hope you dont have to go to Spirit in sandyford , one of the worst dealers out there
