Working above pay grade

Wondering if anyone has any input in my situation or similar experience.

Started a new job in a brand new centre last August. 40 people hired in and in November 10 of us were put into a different unit within the office handling work which HQ had decided to allocate to our centre. There was no recruitment for this new team, it appears management just chose those they felt were performing best. Since starting this new work we've found out that those in HQ who are doing the same work are on a higher grade than us. We're now wondering should we question whether or not we should be on the higher grade, whether or not they should formally recruit for the higher grade or whether we should say nothing for a while and then argue our case during appraisals.

And then those who weren't placed into the new team will surely have cause for grievance given there was no recruitment? Just wondering if anyone has been in a similar situation.
