Ford Focus to an Audi A6 dilemna

Been thinking about an upgrade, or a change more like... a well used but well looked after Audi A6 2008 diesel has come my way, with approx 150k miles on the clock for roughly 1000euro (family member/deal). I currently drive a 1.4l petrol 2007 ford focus with approx 125k Kms on the clock. The timing belt water pump etc were done last year but driving it at moment with broken suspension arches that need fixing or tuning before an NCT next month and the tax is up end of April too.

I don't particularly like the focus, it does the job but its a bit jaded, under powered and the way it eats through petrol is astonishing. Its not bad timing for an upgrade though I'm not entirely convinced this A6 would be an upgrade but I do like the idea of a nicer drive/project car and the price seems good considering I would be doing a timing belt change later this year. Any thoughts? Just buying more problems?

What's the NCT situation on the A6? You would beed to have a good look at the A6 to see what jobs are coming up on it, if you have to get 4 new tyres, timing belt, brake pads and discs you could be in well over another grand.

A second timing belt change is due but not urgent, tires are decent and it breezed through nct last December so it seems good nick. There is a problem with passenger door opening from outside from time to time but I don't think there's any other serious problems with it, that the owner is aware of anyway.

Not sure how you wouldn’t think an A6 is an upgrade, does it have full leather etc?

Those A6 done 300k miles in the uk without massive issues

You could of course bring to Audi and pay them to do a once over, they will have you a report with all the “issues”, a lot of the time most are minor and don’t actually need repair

The Ford Focus are a ( generally ) nice reliable no frills car. They will get you from A to B, like it says on the tin. The A6 is a completely different kettle of fish.....no comparison whatsoever, no matter how you measure it. Different driving experience. I presume that it has the 2 lt diesel engine? Some of these 2 ltr engines had problems with oil pumps, and all A6's have a complicated steering/ suspension set-up which makes them a pleasure to drive, but the Irish roads are not kind to them. On the timing belt plastic cover at the front of the engine, you will see some lettering on the top...IE: "BKD" or similar 3 letter's. Take note of the 3 letters on your engine, and google for example " Audi XXX ( insert Nrs from your engine ) Engines known faults", and that will enlighten you as to any problems that you MIGHT have in future. They are a lovely car to drive, the diesel engine's are very economical ( you will notice a very big difference in fuel consumption figures Audi Diesel V Focus Petrol..) You can drive an A6 all day long, and be fresh getting out of it. Good Luck with it.:D

Lovely cars, but just make sure you are willing to throw money at it when things go wrong, unlike the Ford repairs will not be cheap. Buying the car is the easy part.

€1000 for that is an easy decision, cheap tax as well, buy the car, you have room for any repairs at that price,

It’s a thousand euro, if anything major goes wrong you’ll sell it on for a couple hundred as a parts car.

Honestly at that price I couldn’t see why not, you’ve literally got nothing to lose bar 1k :D

As an aside, the only parts of an Audi noticeably more expensive to repair than the ford will be the suspension components and brake discs it’s not like your maintanence bills will spiral wildly out of control as some would have you believe when it comes to German cars.

When it comes to costs, you will have to factor in savings too...difference between petrol and diesel consumption ( not so much the price difference now, because it's only 2 or 3 cents per litre difference around here ) but I was getting 600 Miles per full tank. When I needed to replace parts, I did not go to the audi dealership ( unless I really had to) and I found that motor factor parts worked fine, including the prices.
