Styled fancy number plates

Hi I've recently purchased a new car and have become fond of a styled plate I see a lot on the road. Just plain white backing with smaller thin writing. Knowing that these aren't fully legal, I'm just wondering has there ever been fixed penalties for these, fines or points or just verbal warnings or are they in many cases ignored at checkpoints. Obviously the car is otherwise road legal so that would be my only illegal element.

The fine for having an incorrectly sized or obscured number plate was increased in the Finance Act to €5,000, from €1,250. The size, format, colour and dimensions of number plates are regulated by VRT legislation.

McGregor might get stung by that
Fines of up to €5,000 may be imposed by the Revenue Commissioners for registration plates that fail to comply with the law

I think non-legal plates are likely to attract Garda attention, and so not worth the risk.

I wonder how many €1250 fines were ever issued?

Most Guards will simply tell you that "those plates will not pass the NCT".
It seems to be a matter for Revenue (ie Customs Checks) rather than a Garda issue.

I got brought to court for it about 10 years ago (bought the car with the plates fitted, slightly smaller different font) ended up with 50 fine per plate, was no option to pay fixed penalty or anything just straight to summons.
