There's 4 buttons above where the key ignition is,there to do with the display on the dash but when pressed they make no sense. Anybody have the same tractor and know what they do..

Buttons on the dash are for the performance monitor function. On some models, there is also a similar set of buttons in the fusebox under the dash (you'll see them if you drop down the lid under the dash where the fuses are). If you have those ones also, they are for setting up and programming rolling circumference for correct speed display and changing the speed display from MPH to KPH etc.

The performance monitor function allows you to display forward speed, show total area worked, trip area worked, total distance travelled and trip distance travelled.
Here's a link to an excerpt from 4200 series training notes that I have, first 2 pages describe the Performance Monitor function and the 2nd 2 pages are for the digital speedometer setup.

    Hope it helps.

Forgot to add, functionality is the same, only difference really is the displays you have should be in the lower centre of the dash, whereas on early 4200's they were on either side of the rev counter.

    Brilliant
Thanks,I noticed when I pressed them I didn't really see anything change in the dash reading, but obviously there is a sequence to it,
You seem to know your stuff on the 40 series MF,we only have it about 2years,great little tractor,

Apologies for bumping this thread but hoping it might attract the right people... what does this light mean on the dash of a late 80s MF 390?
    Many thanks

4WD is on. On early models that didn’t have the electro hydraulic engagement, it is engaged by pushing down on a T handle lever to the left of the seat. If the light is on when handle is up, switch could be stuck. The status switch is somewhere on the side of the transmission in the drop box area where the linkage from the handle is connected to. It might be stuck closed. Either that or the wiring from this switch has rubbed through and it’s shorting to earth somewhere causing the light to come on.

That's great thanks for that. The 4wd is working grand in her so if it's only the case of a light I won't be too concerned.

Also, on these tractors, does putting the lever for the pto forward or back turn it on? The pto is acting up a bit unfortunately and I was aftraid that light had something to do with it.
Any suggestions to get the pto to stop turning?
