Right indicator only works when lights on

As the title says the right indicator will only work when lights are on. When lights are off the right indicator works intermittently but mostly not. I have an 05 Peugeot 307 Automatic. Any ideas to what the fault may be??

    Cheers

At a guess, a bad earth or bad contact on the plate (if it's like the 206) inside the light cluster. It'd be easy to run a new earth yourself if you were so inclined, if it's on the plate you might need to replace the whole light cluster. All Peugeots, Citroens & Renaults suffer from it pretty badly when the cars reach a certain age.

Thanks for that. Had a quick look on YouTube and a video explaining the process is available there. Seems straight forward enough. I’ll have a look at the cluster and see whats going on.

I had a look at the rear cluster and connections and the earth looks ok but the left pin which connects to the grey wire looks rusty and corroded. I’ll try and clean that and see how I get on but if that doesn’t work are we looking at getting a new cluster??

Yup, clean it off & remove the rust with some sandpaper maybe & keep your fingers crossed! If the contacts don't look healthy you can replace the wire with something heavier & make sure all the (new) contacts you make are good. If the cleaning job doesn't work you'll probably have to replace the cluster, I've have to replace both rear clusters on my mothers 2002 206 over the years.

If you mean both front and rear indicators don't function then it's probably the Comms unit. This is the Unit on the Steering Column where the Indicator and Wiper stalks attach to....and is a very common issue on PSA Cars .

Yes, when I switch on the indicator to go right it works for about 3 flashes then nothing front or rear. No light or sounds of clicking from the dash to say it’s working.
Is a new Comms Unit expensive?? Would the like of Kwik Fit be able to do the job or would I need to go to the Peugeot dealer??
    Cheers

A new one is quite expensive. You can pick one up from a scrapyard for anything between €50 and €100 depending on who you go to.
I wouldn't use the likes of Kwik-Fit (or go to a main dealer...too expensive, and they will only supply a new Part).
An auto-electrician or a smaller Indie Garage would be your best bet for getting one fitted. If you're unsure whether it's the Comms unit at fault you're probably better off going to an Auto-electrician 1st anyway.

edit. I had a 2003 Picasso with the same issue a few years ago. It was exactly the same....R/H Indicator would only work with the Lights on. AFAIK I paid about €60 for a Comms from a Breaker and fitted it myself. I think the main difference between Comms is the Fog Light Switch. Once you get one from a PSA Car that has the same method of turning on the Fog Lights it should be fine.

It’s a frustrating one as I always have the lights on anyway and it works fine that way. Have the NCT next month and I’d imagine the checker would leave the indicator on for more than a few clicks to check all bulbs are working.
I know a local mechanic who surely knows an Auto Electrician who could check it out for me.

    Cheers

You could be lucky and the NCT Tester may have the Lights on when checking the Indicators (they usually do), but I wouldn't count on it.
To get at the Comms the Steering Wheel and Airbag have to come off. It's not too complicated but it is a bit fiddly. Most mechanics would be aware of this issue so give your guy a shout and see what he would charge you to do the job. It shouldn't take more than an hour, just to give you an idea of what to expect.
