Was told last night that Nissan Leaf’s and the like are now being taken without the keys due to keyless entry etc so for anyone with keyless entry keep your keys safe either in one of those special wallets or not in your hallway as they grab the signal to open and drive away

It's been a story for a couple of years now. You can put them in a metal box too. Signals can't penetrate them.

You can also use LeafSpy to disable keyless entry

You don't need Leafspy. It's an option under the setup menu on the infotainment system.

Ideal option would be that the car auto-disable keyless entry when it knows it is at home.

But why? Just turn keyless entry off. Then there's no farting around with tin boxes.

Cos you like the convenience of keyless entry... My mam loves it... And if when you're home you keep your keys in a little box, it's no drama.

But you still have keyless entry... Just press the button on the fob instead of the button on the door handle. And it works on all doors!

Less wear and tear on the jeans pockets diving in for the keys each time i use the car ;)

More wear and tear on the driver door button though. And you know which will me more expensive to replace when it wears out ;)

I'd turn it off if I knew how but I don't think you can on the Ioniq. It is very handy though.

Wouldn't this be a problem with any keyless entry not just EVs?

Yes. I believe BMW started the trend.

We keep our keys in a little metal box in the drawer where we used to just chuck them in. It's actually way handier as they are always in the same place, no rooting around trying to find the keys among all the other detritus that ends up in the same drawer. I really like the keyless entry, find it very handy and when I'm back in my van i hate having to find the key to open it up. Also hate having to stick the hey in the hole and turn it to start the damn thing!

You still need to press the button on the driver door to open the door with the keyless entry

I think that's what he means. If you turn off keyless entry you don't have to use that button.

I'm the same. Amazing how we get used to such things. When I get back into my ice after driving the i3 for a few days I'm like 'I have to put the key in to let start it. What kind of obsolete piece of junk is this!' And I don't have to turn the key as it's one of those fob types.

Hell no, I never pick up my car keys out of my pocket any more. It is great to not have to dig for them.

This is one thing I miss going from my Leaf to the I3.

Does your house have keyless entry too, or do you just ring the doorbell? ;)

 Considering the stolen Leafs were all taken between Maynooth and Portmarnock, I thought you, like me, would have turned it off after the fourth one was stolen inside 10 days.

Had an incident with the remote start yesterday evening; OH's OH and OH were somehow in a battle for who was locking the car - I was using the touchpad on the handle to RFID(NFC?)-lock it, she was hitting her remote lock button on her fob at the same moment. When we got back from shopping the car acted like it barely had a charge left and was making some odd noise - evidently it was the immobilizer system, it was confused between our two keys now.

Checked the manual for the part you will find interesting: to put the Toyota key in battery saver mode hold the unlock button while pressing the lock button twice to but it into battery saver mode, the key's LED will blink 4 times and then it will stop functioning as a remote key until the next time a button is pressed on it. The key will apparently do this anyway in some conditions, like if it hasn't been used in 5 days. This got us started back up again, it recognized her key and later again mine. So I mean, it is possible that another option is to put your key in power saver mode like this at night to stop thieves from having a signal to scan from your key.
