Best 2009 diesel estate?

I think I might change in the next couple of months. Mileage warrants a diesel (15,000miles per annum, approx 50% motorway) and I could uses the space the estate brings.

My budget puts me in or around the 2009 mark.

What are the best ones out there that fit my criteria?

    Thanks!

Budget is a huge factor. Are you thinking Focus size or Mondeo size?

Bang for buck I think the Laguna is the best value but there are a few good options otherwise depending on what you need and what your preferences are.

Apologies, I should have been more specific.

I initally though focus/golf sized as I currently drive a focus. But I see passats can be got for about the same price, which has me curious.

I don't know much about diesels, but am I right in thinking that a 2.0 TDI is the one to go for?

Not necessarily. At that price level and age the condition of the car can vary hugely. A Passat in a desirable spec for small money could well be a shed. Don’t look at only the cheapest examples.

The 1.9 would have been favoured over the 2.0 back then for reliability. That said some of the 1.9 engine versions weren’t great either.

This is something along the lines of what I'd be looking at:

    https://www.donedeal.co.uk/cars-for-sale/renault-laguna-2-0dci-estate-dynamique-tom-tom/21015413

2.0 litre has more poke than the 1.5 litre in a car of that size.

Could be, but it's a little outside my budget. I know nothing about lagunas, why would you recommend it?

As an aside I got into a shunt this morning (not my fault) so I think I'll be changing sooner than I thought!

something like that or a non bxe Octavia. My mechanic has a strong preference for that 2.0 diesel over 1.8 or 2.2

If you don't know cars bring a mechanic once you have your research done and checks made.

that looks nice, and in budget. road tax a little high for a 2.0L 08 though?

I like fords, I've owned a focus on two occasions.

Why exactly would you recommend the mondeo?

I'm no car expert but as long as I know what to look out for I'd be ok. (hence why i'm asking here for opinions, and doing my own research)

The passenger rear side rear door and wheel arch of that Mondeo looks to have been repainted at some stage to me. Nothing unusual on a car of that age but that looks a poor enough repair to me.

That Mondeo also changed owner at the start of February according to motortax.ie

Wow. I'd never have copped that. Good eye!

    Thoughts on this?

Called them up and there's no FSH but the guy claims it's been recently serviced, flywheel and clutch done, something about a pump or pumps done. (Line broke up)

It's tempting me. If it's a BXE engine avoid, right?

Thinking of going to see that passat today.

Would there be any reason not to? is the 2.0L bluemotion a good engine?

Car is a uk import so try getting the uk reg number at this stage.

Don't see any advantage in buying a car of that value or with that mileage from a dealer as usually the warranty is not going to be worth much.

Is there some problem with Highline motors?

Rang ahead and he confirmed its the BLS engine, not BXE.

Sorry for all the questions, but my shunt last week has put pressure on me to find a replacement asap as I need the car for work. Through all my searching I keep coming back to this one as my gut tells me its got bang for the buck, and as long as it's been serviced (guy on the phone told me it just got a fuel pump, flywheel and full service. didn't mention the clutch this time but I'll ask again when I'm looking at it.)

Gonna drive it today, but I aint gonna buy it today.

You will find loads of Highline or hi-line or equivalent dealers knocking around. Especially with estates they are used in the UK as salesmen cars etc. So they will buy Passat/Audi/Mondeo etc and drive them into the ground. The car itself will look good but will be clocked to the last

I bought a A4 estate, car was beautiful, pristine. FSH and everything. Just something was nagging at me, I had taken a pic with UK reg on it and rang Audi UK. They had it serviced 2 years previous with 150k miles on it. I bought it with 90k miles on it :-) lucky the dealer took it back.

Dont buy a car just because you are in a rush or you will end up regretting it longer term and it could cost a fortune. You haven't really said what your budget is?

Also, if the value look great on it compared to others that means something is up, normally anyway

Just after driving it. Seller confirmed it's the 138BHP BLS 2.0L common rail diesel.

Full service, clutch, flywheel and fuel pump done. Previous owner said the timing belt was done at 100k Miles. Car is now at 164k. So of it's not clicked it's done about 16.5k a year. It's on at least two owners.

It drives well. Gear box feels good. Brakes are very good.

It basically starts stops and goes well.

Dealer will put it through an NCT for me. I can get it for less than 3k.

Interior isn't too worn but the steering wheel is a little tatty and so is the gear knob. So it's a tiny red flag there.

Funny thing was I asked the dealer if he knew the English reg, and he didn't but I found the old plates under the spare so I took a quick snap. So I can do anything me checking there.

Price is on par with the model and age. At least what I'm finding online anyway.

In other words he didn't want to give you the reg.....

Check and see, you could have 100k miles clipped off it....

Arent you glad now you followed the advice?!
Wasnt even cheap with the 'claimed' mileage.
As someone else said, at that age/price bracket, buying from a dealer doesnt really give you any benefit.

What it does show is a lot of people selling off car because they have 100k miles on them is gas.....that car could have 300k miles on it now and as you said it is driving well

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,363 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

And the 220k miles was recorded on it 4 years ago.

You could go back and offer to take it off his hand for 500 quid :-) see what his reaction is

Always liked the look of the Honda Accord estate. Having owned Honda's in the past, they are fantastic engines. Worth a consideration.

Yep. This thread along with the tips on the other thread didn't steer me wrong.

Have you considered a Toyota Avensis? Given your looking at a 10 yr old car, reliability would be at the top of my list and the D4D 2.0L diesel is near on bullet proof. It has a metal timing chain, so dont have to worry about an expensive timing belt failing or getting replaced.

The current model was introduced in 2009, and whilst it has been face lifted a couple of times, still retains basically the same mechanics & style. Toyota dealer standard servicing costs are sharp as well. If you want oone with reasonable mileage look to import...at least we know you'll do your checks! Good luck with what ever you choose.

I haven't even though I know it would be reliable. My first car was a Corolla, and I wouldn't be surprised if it's still out there. My main reason is that I just find Toyotas really.....basic, and I know at my budget beggars can't be choosers, but I've always found that if I'm smart enough when buying a car, I usually get a lot of car for the money. Up until now, I've just been able to sit and wait for the right used one to come along. The events of this week have put a bit of pressure on me.

On a brighter note, I spoke to my Dad earlier. (first time since my shunt last week) and he's offering to chip in a few grand to help me out, so my budget could now be 5k.

I'm also not as married to the Estate idea, but I think I really need a diesel for the miles I'm doing.

Saab are beautiful.....really a beautiful car to drive

I had one and loved it, when Saab went bust I made the mistake and sold it. I should have kept it

Don't worry about parts as it is really just an Opel underneath but a way waybetter OPel

I was going to suggest Saab as well :p
