Mileage query - can you help?

    Hello All,

I am a car idiot. I'm looking to buy a used reliable car (maybe a VW golf or a Skoda Fabia or something) and my budget is about €7K.

Here's my idiot question: can anyone give me a guideline for what would be good mileage on a (for example) 2009 or 2011 car?

Is that a how long is a piece of string question? Even a rule of thumb would help.

Thank you and please be kind. I've had a 2002 Toyota Yaris that has been unkillable for about 6 years now (it was my first car) and it's finally giving up the ghost so this is all new to me.

For an 8 year old car an average mileage would be around 100k, the average annual mileage in Ireland is around 12k miles.

Do a motorcheck/cartell history check on the car. It could save you hundreds for the sake of €20.Make sure it has a good service history, preferably stamped by main dealer. Also, if you know anyone with good knowledge of cars and what to look for buying used, bring them along.

No problem. Just remember, a good service history is more important than the mileage. Walk away from any car that has no service booklet or where there are gaps in the service history. Good luck!

diesel average would be more .

Petrols average 10500 miles a year and diesels 15000 miles a year

More than likely yes. Plenty of diesel owners who do petrol mileage out there.
