Toyota Prius brake pads

    Hi,

    Just wondering about rear brake pad change in a Toyota prius 2008. I have read to wait 2 minutes after the car is shut down to allow the brake actuator to release and to keep the key away from the car so that it does not activate the brake actuator.

    I was going to open the bleeding nipple when winding back the piston but I read you need the software to bleed the brake. Does any of you guys push the piston back without opening the bleeding nipple?

    Any experience on the prius as I have done the pads on other cars but with the prius it seems it is a little different.

    Many after 2000 year cars needs deactivated brake system before the brake job. Any garage have that type of scanner to deactivate and re-activate the brake system.

    So this is not DIY without the scanner? I was going to disconnect the battery as this would deactivate the brake actuator.

    I can understand using the software for bleeding but for pad change I did think this could be done without the scanner.
    I never push the piston back without opening the bleeding nipple but with bleeding completed with the software I was going to try it

    Yes there are some tricks on the internet how to fool the system. It is easier and safer to do by proper scan tool than trial and error style. Without scanner you can damage yourself/car or just trigger the error codes and you still need the scanner to fix and erase the code(s).

    I missing the old times, when brakes was only the brakes not the computers

    I definitely wouldn't recommend opening rear nipple without techstream software or equivalent.

    I wouldn't expect any problem pushing back piston. Fluid should travel back up to reservoir as long as all systems are off.

    If it won't budge, then you'll need to think again!

    If you do end up with an error code/warning light the chances are the Brake regeneration isn't working either, and the brake Pedal is simply operating the brakes directly.
    There is a method to remove this warning issue. I had to do it about 4 years ago on my 2008 Prius. It involved ignition on, press brake pedal X number of times, and press something else. I can't remember what the procedure was but it is widely available online.


    Main thing is to disconnect the Battery and remove the ABS Relays before you start. I think the reason for removing the relays is that just disconnecting the 12v Battery will still leave the Main traction Battery connected and this could possibly power the Brake Actuator (and push out the Pistons.......)

    edit; I didn't touch the bleed nipples.
