NetGear WNDR 4500 V1 (N900) with WiFi Extender or New WiFi router?

I have VirginMedia 240 Mbps connection. At the moment I have a NetGear WNDR 4500 V1 (N900) WiFi router. I am not getting good WiFi signsls in upstairs.

So shall I go for the existing NetGear WNDR 4500 V1 WiFi router + WiFi extender? If yes, which WiFi extender?

Alternatively, I can go for a new WiFi router and make the existing NetGear WNDR 4500 V1 (N900) WiFi router as access point.

Is it worth going for AX wifi routers, thinking future proof?

I have bought a Netgear AC 1200 WiFi extender.

Any suggestion regarding custom firmware for Netgear WNDR 4500 v1, other than DD-WRT?
