I remember reading somewhere that McCartney came up with the song because he read a review of another bands record that described it as the loudest song ever and he reckoned they could do better. And apparently in his head it was partly about the fall of civilisation, the fall of Rome in particular, because he was reading a book about it at the time, but I reckon the "let's be louder than anyone else" was the bulk of it. Charles Manson had other ideas...

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

    That’s exactly it.

Macca wanted to outdo the new fashion of loud loud rock coming from The Who , Zep etc.

The recording sessions put such physical demands on the band that ringo utters the immortal “I’ve got blisters on my fingers” at the end !!

    We didn't start the fire
    It was always burning
    Since the world's been turning
    We didn't start the fire
    No we didn't light it
But we tried to fight it

It was an interview with Pete Townshend talking about The Whos new single that inspired him. I think the Who song was I Can See For Miles.
