Hi folks , I am just looking for some information on anyone with experience of the Audi A4 2 litre diesel 122 bhp engine . Is it ok for this size a car . I do a long commute a few days a week 50 % motorway . It is a 172 model . At the moment I drive a BMW 151 with 163 bhp , might regret the loss of the hp . Thanks in advance

Haven't driven one, 0-60 in 10.5s is ok, would cruise perfectly fine on the motorway, I'm sure it would be grand. Drive it and see is the best way to know for sure.

The current A4 is a good bit lighter than the old one.

Thanks for the replies folks , yes it’s 163 bhp in the BMW efficient dynamics .

Personally I have always missed the power when I changed for a lower powered car.

    But horses for courses.

It'll be grand on the commute and fine in general. Make sure it has cruise control and climate control if you're used to them.

If doing a long commute would you be better rack up the miles on the beemer?

Personally I would not go from a 163bhp to 122bhp without some extremely compelling reason. I think it would always feel like a downgrade for the sake of getting a newer reg plate.

I see your point wildly boaring , I was on here a couple of months ago regarding a new car and I decided to keep the beemer for another few months . It’s a 151 with nearly 100k miles . The trade in is decent goin up a couple of years and do the same again in a couple of years .

If you're used to 161 bhp, 122 is going to be a significant drop. My own car has 189 bhp but I regularly drive cars with around 125 bhp, the extra power is very noticeable, the extra grunt makes overtaking much easier.

I'd say 0-60 in 10.5 is not ok at all, especially if you are used to it being sub 8 seconds like the op is.

I also have a 163bhp 3 series and test drove a 518d. Even though it's only about 15bhp less, albeit in a bigger car, it was very noticeable to me and that car is rated at 9.2 seconds to 60, not a chance I would go for one.

Everytime I see these 'premium' brands with rubbish power outputs it makes me wonder what the point is. The main dealers are littered with 316ds, 318ds and 518ds and Audi's with 122 bhp..

The absolute minimum they should sell is 150bhp in a 3 series/A4 and 180bhp in a 5 series/a6, otherwise what's the point. All show, no go..

Roughly when was the tipping point when cars generally began weighing less than their predecessors?

Years ago I went from BMW 330i to an Audi A4 2.4 litre.

    Really missed the power.

Volkswagen Group MQB platform cars are generally lighter than their predecessors. Before that Mazda had a bit of a weight saving thing going on.

Thanks for all the replies folks .Colm am I right in saying that the Audi being lighter than the previous generation that the engine would be up to the task .

Are u sure the a4 comes in that little power in a 172? I thought the minimum in diesel was 150bhp?

Yes, lots of them for sale with the 122 hp engines. Seems a very underpowered unit for something like an S-line A4

Depends on what the task is! I’ve driven the previous generation with the 120 2.0 quite extensively and it’s not a fast car but is still quite capable at motorway driving.

It will be no match for the BMW power wise, and of course dynamically it’s in a different league too. Then again, a lot of people would choose comfort over fun anyway.

Because a lot of people couldn't give a flying jot what the power is. It cruises comfortably on the motorway and does what people want it to do they are happy. If that's what they want more power to them.

OP would you not try to get the 150BHP version the 122bhp version only came out around 171 so there are plenty 150bhp ones around in the new Model even 2017 / 2018. Can’t imagine the 122bhp would be great I have driven the b9 150 2.0tdi and felt fine power wise.

Thanks Colm for the reply . I have owned 5 or 6 Audi’s previously to buying the beemer . To be honest although I like the BMW and it’s power I sometimes felt it a big light on the road ( that may be just me and a topic for another day ) . Maybe comfort over fun would suit me on this long commute :-) 😜

Absolutely mad going to a 120hp.... Wife has a 151 143hp A4 and it seems dead to me..40hp of a decrease is massive!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,684 ✭✭✭✭lawred2

    I had a Saab 1.9 which was over 180bhp..

    120 seems pathetic for a 2 litre

Or not, as the case may be...

Thanks again for all the replies folks . I understand people saying it’s crazy dropping from 160 to 120 bhp as it is is a big drop . I took the Audi for a test drive yesterday and I thought it was sound to drive . Obviously not as fast as the beemer but certainly up to the task . I told the owner I would have a think and call him back today ,( that had nothing to do with the power of the car) . Having thought about it I am going to go ahead with the purchase .Personally I think this car suits my needs . Thanks again .
