Remaps

    Hi,

I wanted to get a remap done, and after reading plenty of UK forums rang my insurance company thinking it would incur a small fee.

They advised that they wont cover any rermapped car and in the event of a claim and finding out insurance would be void for non disclousure etc.

Personally I don't like the idea of that hanging over me, but at the same time want the remap done.

Anyone familiar with insurance companies that will actually cover them? Or is just a case of hope for the best

    Thanks

A re-map is done via the software in the ECU , it is extremely unlikely an Insurance assessor would ever know your car was re-mapped unless they are going to Dyno it after a crash...which they will never know.

I have never heard of a case where they have identified a re-map unless you have a tuning box and leave it plugged into the engine.

It's a bit of a odd one alright because any second-hand car could have been remapped by a previous owner too. How many buyers go and have this checked?

I'm not saying this as a way around the OP's dilemma (if he did get caught he'd be screwed- especially as he's now flagged it to them as something he's considering.. all calls are recorded remember!), but it's true all the same

Insurance & small fee don't go in the same sentence in Ireland.

If you get it done & have an accident, you take your chances. Most Insurance companies will not willingly cover you for a remapped car.

Threads like this will highlight to assessors to possibly check for ECU tampering. In general only a very small proportion of cars in accidents are remapped so it's not a major issue for them currently.

It's totally irresponsible and frankly pretty stupid to be "taking a chance" on non disclosure.

If you have a (for example) BMW 520D but want the performance of a 530D just go and buy one and insure it for what it is.

You'd be kidding yourself if you didn't think there's a few mapped Audi diesels coming in from the UK.

Which raises an interesting point as I alluded to above.

Given that many of these cars are being imported through dealers here and resold.. an insurer would have a very tough time determining who remapped a car and when.

Very true and valid point, did consider that myself, could easily be bought and declared as `No` to any modifications in good faith, I don't think it would matter in the event of a serious claim and discovering it though, who did it or if knew it was even done would be irrevalant I imagine.

In the UK it seems to be on average an extra 30-50 quid on the policy

Ah yes but this is Ireland where the cash cow motorist must pay through the nose for everything.

Which, as if often the case when people are charged extortionate fees for things, would only encourage people to not declare a remap.

Do it and say nothing. the insurance industry in Ireland is seriously out of touch.
