Drinkable water on all taps

    I'm renovating an old house and I want to have drinkable water on all taps. 

    I'm hearing different opinions from plumbers what's possible and allowed in terms of connecting taps to mains (e.g. no water tank).

    I'm aware that the Building Regulations 2008 Technical Guidance Document suggests that kitchen sink should be taken directly from the mains and other supplies from water storage cistern (section G 1.3). 
    The Building Regulation 2008 itself (the law) doesn't however prohibit using mains. 

    My question: Is it legal to connect all taps to the mains?

    Hi honza,

    Thanks for your patience while we looked into this for you.

    Irish Water considers that the hygiene provisions in the building regulations ''The cold water supply to the kitchen sink should be taken directly from the service pipe supplying water to the dwelling; the cold water supply to the bath or shower and the washbasin and to other appliances in the dwelling should be from a cold water storage cistern'' represents best practice.

    In relation to your question, we recommend that you contact the building control authority, ie. Local Authority in your area.
