    Hi all,

I’m considering buying my own car instead of sharing one with my mother, as I have been. It’ll be my first car and first insurance on my own. I’m looking to spend as little as possible, and I’ve been looking at a 08 1.4 petrol Renault Megane that’s looking for just under €1,000. I don’t know a huge amount about cars so I’m just wondering if this would be a decent car, if the price is right etc.

    Thanks in advance!

    Had a Mégane...never again.
    I've an 08 Skoda Octavia which hasn't missed a beat since I've got it. (5 years) .
I need to change and only for my wife insisting I get an SUV, I'd get a skoda saloon again

Renault Megans of that vintage were not known for being very reliable so I wouldn't believe that model would improve with age.

If you want something reliable for small money then look at a Toyota Corolla, you might have to drop back a few years however.

There not the worst of that particular vintage by any means. Those built after 2005 were decent, more reliable than similar sized models from Peugeot or Citroen even if that's not a particularly high standard to be measured by. You could get an awful lot worse for a thousand or so.

Bought a 03 Corolla last year for €900. Best banger I have ever owed. It sold me on the Toyota brand

I'm a big Renault fan but I'd still never recommend a Megane II or Laguna II. There are just too many bad ones out there than good ones. If the OP is on a tight budget then a Megane II would not be on my list of recommendations.

insurance would be my biggest concern if I were you. Do you just need it for trips around town, national roads, motorway or what?

A Renault Clio 1.2 a Fiat Punto or a Panda would all be better cars. They are a little smaller than the Megane do. The Megane is hit and miss. Ones of that age give a lot of electrical problems so best avoided.

The other 3 I mentioned are better and are relatively cheap to run and maintain.

Itsa always a good idea when buying a second hand car to get someone who knows a lot about cars to come check it over for you to make sure its safe and has no potential problems like suspension, breaks etc.

    Live long and Prosper

    Peace and long life.
