2007 Passat FSI - audible handbrake alert

    Hi All,

I have had some issues with my handbrake on my 2007 Passat 1.6 FSI. I've had the push button replaced and lately the behavior I am seeing is I hear 3 loud beeps and the light on the dash flashes for the handbrake. The handbrake still works but I tend not to use it very much in case in ceases up. I have a long drive planned for this weekend and the noise will do my head in but other than that have any of you ever experienced this or is it anything to be concerned about? Is it just a sensor or some software issue? If it was something serious I could have somebody look at it this week before the trip.

    Thanks Guys

Every part of those systems gave bother. The buttons had issues, the control units at the calipers had issues and the software had issues. It could be any/ all of them. Best short term advice is do as you are doing and don't use the parking brake, but really you need to get it checked if you want peace of mind from it.

    Hi All,

So just to follow up on this. The yellow handbrake/park symbol is now flashing up on the dash when I turn on the ignition whilst the 3 audible beeps are still there too.

Dropped it off to the local mechanics. They tell me the calipers at the rear is the issue and need replacing. Does this sound about right as it's a pricey enough job? Thank you all.

As Toyotafanboi confirmed it could be any of a number of things, calipers were an issue on them. In a lot of cases it is just the motor that fails and that can be replaced far more cheaply than the entire caliper.

Thank you for the response. The handbrake is still functioning (push button and handbrake itself) so I was hoping it wouldnt be too big a job. It's just really all the alerts on the dash causing the annoyance and wanted to have it checked out also in case it was something serious.

The light on the dash is only there to tell you that its found fault in the system.

The control units at the calipers can crack and perish over time and let moisture in which causes all kinds of trouble with them. If your car has never had them replaced, you're on borrowed time with them.

Obviously we can't say for certain but it's certainly plausible that you need to replace both units.

I had this happen on my 06 Passat OP.. was the caliper on the back right wheel. Happened as well with my 05 A6 then after that

It was intermittent at the start but when I almost got stranded in a car park because it wouldn't release (it did eventually), I just put black tape over the button to stop me pressing it out of habit until I got it sorted.
