Subtitles

So, it's Sunday evening, I'm just finished dinner and I decided I'd watch an episode or two of Jack Ryan which so far has proven to be a pretty good show.

But christ am I sick of the trend over the last couple of years to subtitle foreign parts in English shows. Narcos is probably the most extreme example I've watched, but it's getting to the point where you can't just stick on some shows and watch it without spending half the episode reading along and rewinding back for the bits you missed.

Realism is one thing, but these are US English shows made predominantly for the English market. If they must do this, could they not transition to English like they did in the Hunt for Red October :

.. But without the Scottish Russian captain obviously

So, is it just me that this annoys or does realism/accuracy trump entertainment for the TV viewers of Boards these days?

I'm OK with this approach, but then I've been watching subtitles routinely for many years now. My only gripe is that sometimes the choice of colour or typeface is poor so it can be hard to read against some backgrounds.

Trapped is an Icelandic show currently on BBC4.

It is in Icelandic with English subtitles but there are some parts in spoken English.

However I sometimes find it hard to understand what they are saying (with their Icelandic accents) that I stick on the BBC subtitles anyway.

I don't mind subtitles, but watching Border town on Netflix (a Finnish thing) I do wonder if the dialogue really is as clunky as the subtitles make it, or is it just poor translation.

I find it very hard these days to get into it if the characters are speaking the wrong language. Unless it’s a comedy or cheap action movie, anything I don’t have to take seriously, then ok.
