What mileage should I consider too high?

Hi, I'm looking for a runaround as my car has died. I have been looking at 07/08 Toyota auris models some of which have mileage around the 250,000km mark. I do between 7,000-8,000km myself per year. Should I avoid a car with 250,000 km on the clock?

I have a budget of 2-3000 thousand but could probably go a little bit higher. Are there other models I should consider? Insurance not much of an issue as I have maximum no claims bonus & a full license for over 10 years. I just want something reliable as I do a mixture of city & m50 driving usually with two young kids in tow.

If anyone can advise I'd be grateful! Thanks

Check out the bangernomics thread 3k is plenty but buy between 500 to 1200 and factor in some small repairs and you could have a nice motor for a long time.

Buy a car on its condition and history never mind the mileage at this price point.

I bought an auris 1.4 diesel two years ago with 230k kms on the clock. Hasnt given me any hassle, but it was properly serviced. It was an ex fleet rental and serviced on the button.
The high mileage puts a lot of people off, thats why a lot of people clock them!

Mileage is only one aspect of a car's history but it doesn't always tell the full story. I've seen people who do very small mileage be very hard and abusive on cars. Just remember that your looking at cars that are 10 to 12 years old so they are bound to have that sort of mileage on them. So judge a car on condition and service history also.

Definitely look into everything woth the car, not just the mileage.

We were buying a cheap car for my girlfriend last year, viewed loads of cars. One car struck me in particular, 11 year old car, looked ok from outside had a reported 35k mileage on it. I was surprised, got a friend who’s a mechanic out and he went through it with a fine comb, the peddles were worn inside the car, the driver seat had a lot of wear and tear on it and the steering wheel/gear stick was all worn. He questioned if it was cloecked as it had a lot more signs it was used more than the 35k mileage reported on it.

That’s not to say it was clocked, but when questioned on it the man told us to leave!

I know someone who has a ten-year-old Auris (1.4 petrol) with 400,000 on the clock. It's never broken down or given any serious trouble, beyond the usual 'wear and tear' that you might expect from a car with such high mileage.

Thanks a million for all the replies! I am going to have my mechanic take a look at the car & the seller is happy with that. Will see how it gets on.
