Hi everyone, I got a quick question for a friend of mine. They are a couple and have two children, both over 18. The kids live with them. She's wondering would the social welfare rent supplement pay her according to the fact that they're a couple with two kids or, since both kids are over 18 they won't be considered in the application?

Only in very very exceptional circumstances now will your friend be considered for RS. It’s far more likely they’ll be referred to HAP. They need to be on a local authority housing list. HAP involves the means testing of each member of the household including the income of each of the 4 adults over 18.

rent supplement is only given now to people who lose their jobs due to nofault of their own

my husband was made redundant a few years back and we got itfor about 2 years, but we were already renting and it was either rs or homeless at the time.

I recently (around 3/4 weeks ago) filled out all the rent allowance forms, we have been private renting 8 years.... income dropped since husband went on job seekers, and took the forms to the community welfare officer who said this payment is no longer made that the only route for us was to get on the council housing list in order to get HAP which replaced rent supplement.

yep this isthe new thing, i should have added that we only got rs as i was not working when husband was let go (i was ill at the time so not capable of work but also not deemed eligble for benifits, so our entire household income with 2 very young kids was his job seekers) , his redundancy was also only 10k so would have only lasted 7 months to pay the rent alone.

Essentially there is no rent supplement for new applicants for rent assistance ,
It's only hap unless you are already getting Rent supplement long term , eventually anyone seeking assistance paying for rent will only get hap
