Best national anthems?

Was just watching the darts and big John Henderson came out to Flower of Scotland. While it wasn't the best version of it, it reminded me of in the past when it's been sung at rugby games and has been phenomenal - https://youtu.be/1Hotgyw4wOk

So what're your favourite national anthems? I love the Scottish, Welsh and French myself. I know more words of La Marseillaise than I do the Irish national anthem.

Big fan of Flower of Scotland too, also the French and Russian.

The Young Wolfe Tones do a great jaunty version of The Soldiers Song that I like a lot too

"Ode to Joy" anthem of the EU and the Council of Europe, not a national anthem per se but perhaps a supranational anthem :-)

Although purely instrumental (Beethoven's 9th), it sounds even better when the words of Schiller's Ode to Joy are added.

    With vocals

The South African national anthem, the 1995 RWC final was the first time I heard it and combined with the atmosphere of the occasion, as 1 comment put it, it gave me goosebumps

Russia is pretty cool for it's cold war feel.

God save the Queen is pretty rousing if you ask me as is the amhran na bhfiann. Don't really know many anthems to be fair.

All anthems have a bit of a cold war feel to them, all that cock waving at various Olympic games.

I agree about Italy though, its the best by far. In terms of future thinking for Ireland, I think New Zealand made a great job of a bi-lingual dual-heritage anthem.

Flower of Scotland is not a national anthem, at least not yet. Its an adopted song, just like Ireland's Call, but has no status. Works a treat for getting the blood up though!

Careful now, this includes the nazi era stanzas which have been long since dropped. 'Deutschland uber alles' etc.

The official anthem today is from 1:58 of this video onwards.

Do Russia still use the old Soviet union anthem?

    That was epic

The Welsh Anthem in Cardiff is something else.

Flower of Scotland with the lone piper and the band letting the crowd singing the second verse on their own in Murrayfield is brilliant too.

French, Italians and Argentinean are brilliant too.

Much better than the Phil Coulter driver the Irish Rugby lads have to sing.

People here seem to confuse songs sung at sporting events with actual national anthems.

Anyone for YNWA lads? Fields of Athenry?

Most "National Anthems " have no legal standing and are not recognized by legislation.

When you go to football games and hear other national anthems the Irish is lot better then most.

Flower of Scotland has a line in it that says "and be the nation again" so considering 55% don't believe that I don't include it.

The first part of this is actually illegal now in Germany. Any overtly nationalist references can get you arrested and potentially a prison sentence. It is more serious than you would imagine.

There are still pockets of eastern Germany where national socialism is rampant. Skinheads etc.

Not just dull and insipid - it only embraces one individual rather than the whole nation.

I do like the part where the crowd cheer for the "that the flag was still there", its like the pause is for the reaction alone a bit like Flower of Scotland where some of the crowd throw in "bastards" after one line.

Well to be fair the whole song is about Bannockburn is about winning the battle, they subsequently lost the war. The "send him homeward, ta think again". Which he did and then came back and bate the heads off them.

This song was written during the Jacobite rebellion around 1745. The lyrics of the sixth verse are -

May he sedition hush, And like a torrent rush, Rebellious Scots to crush.
