There other option is to keep doing what they are doing and then find they've been undercut by everyone else who changed to eV before them.

They see Electric as killing off petrol and diesel. Why pump good money after bad?

Technology and the market dictate this.

    Same as CD killed video.

It also features trademark Honda driving dynamics with a sporty rear wheel drive configuration

    Textbook Honda there.

It is pretty clear that its Honda Europe that are going this way not Honda Motor worldwide, there will probably be ice vehicles still available in other markets.

They are only saying 100% electrification not 100% EV. Big difference.

ICE will still be important in that mix of BEV, PHEV and Hybrid.

    Here's the tell-tale words...
"Honda expects full hybrid technology to play a key role in meeting its aims of 100% electrification by 2025."

Exactly, they will go the Toyota route, pathetic hybrids and PHEVs with tiny batteries.

Sure, I'd rather see a PHEv and Hybrid than a diesel but the technology has advanced so much but Honda and Toyota are so far behind now that probably the only thing they can do is to go PHEV at most with tiny batteries.

We all know the technology was there in 2001 for a decent EV or Plug in but unfortunately Ovonics sold the NiMh patents to GM who then sold it on to an oil company, Chevron Texaco and that was the end of that because they would only allow a max of 1 Kwh battery to be used in any PHEV or any other type of EV/Hybrid.

Fast forward to 2019 and that's theh best Toyota has to offer along with some pathetic PHEV with tiny Lithium battery and now Honda are only talking about going this route, it's comical.
