4 girls aged 17

4 girls aged 17 are coming to stay with me for a week this summer. Two of them are my granddaughters. I haven't been around teenagers since their mother was a teenage so I'm not up to date on teenage stuff. I live in Dublin. They are coming from suburbia USA. Do 17 year olds go 'clubbing'? Would it be safe to let them out at night in Dublin? I could drop them off and pick them up but they certainly would want me to be hanging around. Perhaps 17 year olds are not allowed in clubs, I'm so not up to date I'm not even sure what the legal age for drinking is in Ireland, 18 I suppose.
Any insight would be very much appreciated.

It's not a wind up! It's not unusual for grandchildren to visit their grandmother. I just wish they were much younger, it would be much easier to entertain them and I wouldn't be worried about keeping them safe while they are with me.

I'd ask their parents about their habits in the US, and what they think is acceptable with different and more lax laws here.

You said you are unsure about legal age to drink but you are a grandmother!

You wont have to entertain them, they'll be too busy posing for Instagram shots.

On the plus side 17 girls aged 4 would be worse.

Send them to the Gaeltacht. Sit back, relax and they will have a ball and will be someone else’s resbonsibility.

I think they'll be ok. I'll give them my high powered air gun and mace spray that I like to have with me in Dublin after dark.

If this is real, why on earth would you agree to take on four 17 year old's if you are this unprepared? Yes 17 year old's go clubbing but they have fake id's, a network of friends to rely on and generally know the area. Do not drop them off in Dublin, hope they will be ok and arrange to pick them up later.

Surely you've talked with their mother about their maturity level and also their experiences? If they're used to going out in the US, that changes things but the legal drinking age in the US is 21, so they might not be drinking yet. It would be a bad idea to let them go off drinking if they are not used to it and don't know their limits. Do you have any other friends who have grandkids around the same age? Would they be up for entertaining them at any stage?

Teenagers haven't really changed since your daughter was one. They will be an angel to your face, swear blind they will stick to your boundaries and as soon as you are out of sight they will do what they want. The only difference between now and then, is that now they post all the stupid sh!te they get up to on social media.

Talk to the mother. If they're not allowed out in the US, they're not allowed out in Ireland. If the mother gives permission, then it's on her head if anything happens to them. Personally no way would I let them loose in the city centre at night. If anything happened you'd never forgive yourself.

My 17 year old brother and 3 of his mates will look after them.

No problem getting into bars and clubs in Dundalk, just get them to have the cleavage on show

Plenty of Johnnies too, he’s too young for Kids especially annoying American ones

    Hi OP!
There are loads of age friendly activities available in Dublin. I don't think we can encourage you to break the law here.
If you are a serious about this you might get better information in the Dublin forum or parenting one.
