Hot water not working after oil tank refill

    Hello,

We have an old, single zone, heating system for our house. Recently the oil ran out, heating obviously stopped, we got it refilled, turned it back on, came on fine. However, radiators are coming on but for some reason the hot water tank doesn’t seem to be getting heat at all.

There are 2 sets of controls for the heating:
1 is in the house and sets the timing for the boiler to come on (twice a day, all day, or constant).
2 is at the boiler itself (outside shed) which is just a thermostat.

I have looked everywhere and can’t seem to find any valve or extra control. We only moved in just over a year ago and have no diagrams or anything how the plumbing is laid out.

Extra piece of info: The immersion heater for the hot water works fine.

    Any ideas?

Did you turn any valves in the hot press. A pic of the hot press would help.

There is no link to running out of oil and the hot water not working.id be checking the water content in the heating system first.Do you have a small water tank in the attic

At the bottom of the press are 2 copper pipes (closest to the tank) coming out of the floor, and they’re both hot. The pipes going off them (I presume to the radiators) are hot but 20-30 cms above that they start going cold.

Get a lagging jacket for the tank if you don't have one already.

When the heating is on check the pipes if they are hot, are all the rads hot when on?

Do you have lots of cold water coming out of the hot taps?

Rads are coming on just fine, just no hot water (unless we use immersion)

Not sure what you mean by lots - amount of water (and pressure) seems to be normal.

If it helps, the temperature of the water coming out of the hot taps is much closer to room temperature than the water coming out of the cold taps (we did have the immersion heater on a bit yesterday for a shower)

As agusta suggested, check that these have water. From your other replies it seems that one of them has water, but check them both anyway.

By lots of cold water in the hot taps, I meant was the flow (now cold) from the hot taps as good as when it was working fine.

EDIT: If both tanks have water, then try turning off all but one of the radiators to see if this kicks off the cylinder heating. Normally there would be a balancing valve to do this but I don't see one in the pic.
