I’m on the lookout for a quality computer/obd scanner for my own little home garage/workshop I’ve got myself a lift last year and am finding myself doing more and more jobs that require a good computer my main requirements are
1-Good fault finding ability to get error codes
2-can give commands to lets say tell a fuel pump to run
    3-push back electronic handbrake
5-one that doesn’t need yearly subscriptions
    6-Good manufactures database

I’ve about in or around €300 I don’t mind spending a bit more if necessary

Look at Autel mid-range stuff, very good and rather sensibly priced.

If you can find an autel md802 elite all systems (not sure they make them anymore seem to be only offering 4 systems now) It does all modules of all cars (airbag, abs, dash, lights etc) including all manufacturer specific codes, is fast and robust with good graphing live data and even offers service functions such as service reset, electric handbrake rewind and adaptations for VW, BMW etc and free lifetime updates.

I use it far more than our posh scanners because its so fast and easy and doesn't need to be recharged

You wont find anything for 300 that will allow you to send command to turn things on though, thats more 800-3000 range stuff if you want a tool that does multiple manufacturers. A Ds808 is about the cheapest unit to get that kind of functionality

autel mk808 are on that range, bit under 400. I have one 3 months old and do not need anymore - upgraded to star diagnostics

I can find the autel on eBay for about £160 and it’s the all systems version that seems really good value

No matter what unit you buy it will still have to updated annually to keep up to date with car manufacturers latest updates. unless you don't work on any newer cars than unit you buy.

I have bought the autel MD802 Elite all systems as recommended by Rex-x I’m just waiting on it to come in the post.
Ah yeah I do realise it has to be updated to keep up with the times, the autel i bought is advertised as lifetime free updates so we’ll see how that pans out!

Yeah no problem I’ve a ford transit connect that will be a good little test for it straight away it’s not starting and it’s tricky to pin point exactly where the problem lies....if it can get to the root of that it has begun earning its keep :)

You are 100% understand wrong the scanner working principle. It does not pinpoint the problems, if you do not use very expensive dealer level scanner. You need to use the car schematics and scanner together because 1 single problem can be caused way other reason. Yes it makes bit easier your life but on the same time it makes it way more complicated too. That is why people get the expensive repairs - bad diagnose. Take the same error car to other garage and you get the different readings. Same car, same problem, but different people and different knowledge.

Sorry I’ll ask for your permission before I post next time!
And yes I’ll buy a €3000 Euro dealership level scanner for the few cars I do because that would make total economic sense!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 416 ✭✭w211

30 000eur cost the dealer level scanner.
You do not need to ask my permission, I am nobody here. My point was, you need to look the schematics too. The dealer level scanner can see more and program almost everything. There are very specific codes what helps pinpoint the problem and even the manufacturer suggestions what to do and how. The car manufacturers are not forced to share that information, they share only the generic codes.

I thought I’d add a little update to this thread.
I got the Autel Md802 all systems elite early this week and I’m happy to report it’s an amazing little tool for the money,it found the exact same fault in the ford connect that we had previously scanned with a fancy snap-on solus so no I didn’t need a dealership level scanner costing €30000!
I updated it for free to cover up to 2018 model cars.
I did a full scan on a seat Leon Fr and pinpointed a fault on an abs system
You can do live tests on a heap of components to see are they functional and reset epb on a tonne of cars and reset oil service lights

For the money they are very capable, our one gets used in a professional environment due to its convenience and it's 7 years old now and still perfect!
Updating is a little slow and you really need a 32gb memory card but those are smaller hinge on the face of it, enjoy!

would this be the on you got,
    https://www.ebay.ie/itm/Autel-MaxiDiag-Elite-MD802-Auto-Diagnostic-Tool-Code-Reader-Scanner-ABS-SRS-EPB/273748844154
seem to be other md802 cheaper but presume these wouldn't do ABS/AIRBAG?
