Does anyone know if you can make a VRT payment with two separate debit cards? I ask because the VRT amount will be greater than my single transaction allowance for debit card.

"The NCT Centre will also collect the VRT charge (and other tax liabilities) on behalf of Revenue.

You can pay by cash(up to a limit of €200), laser debit card(up to a limit of €1500), bank draft, credit card, or company cheque with TAN numbers only (to a limit of €10,000).

In the case of bank drafts and cheques they should be made payable to Applus Car Testing Service Ltd."

    Not sure if that helps...

You don't have to pay the VRT amount on the day of the inspection. You can always come back with a bank draft for the full amount if that's more convenient, as long as it's still within in the 30 day period.

And it's 30 days from when you brought it into the country, not 30 days from the date of inspection.

    Another question for you guys,

If the car is bought with under 6000km and then is presented to VRT centre with over 6000km is VAT still payable? Is there a way for them to know?

No VAT payable, I've brought two cars in over 6mths old with less than 6000kms on the clock, made use of the 30days and drove them over the 6000kms mark and no issue, it's strictly 6000kms+ at date of inspection so you will be fine

Easiest thing to do is get the inspection , they give you the price. Go off get bank draft and return same day.

They don’t give you a quote they give you the exact fee. Yes you can return without an appointment to pay providing it’s the same day

Card limit is whatever your bank allows. Get a quote from he online calculator take a bank draft for like 75% of the price or minus your card limit and then pay whatever balance on the day on the card.

The only limit on the card is whatever your bank sets, the NCT don't have a limit.

How and where can I pay my VRT?

The NCT Centre will also collect the VRT charge (and other tax liabilities) on behalf of Revenue. You can pay this charge either by
    • Bank Draft or postal order (made payable to Applus Car Testing Service Ltd)
    • Cash (up to a limit of €250)
    • Debit Card
    • Credit Card excluding American Express
    • Company cheque with TAN numbers only (to a limit of €10,000 payable to Applus Car Testing Service Ltd)

FYI, if you move to a 'smart' meter electricity plan, you CAN'T move back to a non-smart plan.

You don't have to take a 'smart' meter if you don't want one, opt-out is available.

Buy drinks in 3L or bigger plastic bottles or glass bottles or cartons to avoid the DRS fee.

Just to echo what was said already, the only debit card limit is what is set by your bank. I paid total VRT of about €6.5k in one go with a debit card last September.

If you have a credit card you can load it with money and there is no limit to how much you can spend once you are in credit, only issue is if the card is stolen or cloned they don't protect your money.

It was a BMW 420. Ex demo so just barely above the 2 limits (6 months & 6k kms) for the VAT. With the VRT I still saved a good few thousand against what I would have paid here. Also, got access to a much bigger choice of cars which was probably my main reason for looking in the UK.

I have bought in cars before and just paid the VRT on the day I had an appointment. But this time I couldn't actually pay the VRT on day I went to the NCT centre because they had to send it off to revenue to get a quote. The (very nice) chap in the NCT centre was telling me that anything less than a year old or of high value was getting flagged to revenue for a quote/clarification. I was a bit nervous as I was afraid I was going to be screwed, but the quote actually came back from revenue about 10 or 20 quid cheaper than the online calculator so it was all good. Didn't have to make a second appointment to pay, just dropped in any time with my quote and paid up.
