Moving home after 2 years away, what are we entitled to?

Hi Everyone,

Me and my partner are moving back to Ireland in May/June after being away for 2 years 4 months for myself and 1 year 7 months for my partner in New Zealand. We will also be bringing back our 4 month old boy.

I'm just wondering what we would be entitled to moving back home as my partner is under the impression we would be entitled to nothing after being away for so long.

Now just to put in into perspective, we were both working in Ireland for a number of years before we moved abroad. I will be working when I get back home, but my partner will still be on maternity leave. We will also be renting/buying when we return.

So in short, would my partner be entitled to unemployment benefit and also child allowance?

Any advice would be much appreciated.

From what you say your partner might be entitled to Jobseekers Benefit when she gets back depending on her PRSI situation before she left. But she will have to be looking for and available for full time work straight away.
Alternatively depending on your take home pay ye might be entitled to Working Family Payment instead. This would absolve her from the looking for and available for work element.
Ye will be entitled to child benefit.
Ye can apply for medical cards and see how you go. It’s means tested but they will allow for rent/mortgage and travel to work as outgoings against your wages.
If ye are renting then apply to the local authority to be considered as “in need of housing” as this is the key to HAP which is a payment towards rent costs. Also means tested.

Child benefit from the day you move back and free GP card for under 6 for the little one at the very least. Free 2 years preschool when time comes. Don't know much about anything else.
