I’m curious that Jerry keeps talking about her speed but she isn’t known for her finishing kick, is she? I just love her grit and determination though, fabulous athlete.

She's never been a last 50-100 kicker but she always kicks well from 400 out. She was absolutely lifting tonight for that last 400m. To Challenge Eanoui off that kind of pace is no mean feat as she is probably one of the meanest kickers in Europe.

Given he was her coach perhaps he knows a bit? Also that she was an 800/1500 type for years (argue since moving to Vernon she seems to be a lot stronger)

I got her at 60.5 for the last 400 and 30 flat for the last 200. That's quick indoors.

The pole made Caira work dam hard to pass her which was the difference at the end

He does know his stuff for sure and im certainly no expert as has no doubt been proven here many times! Just something i was curious about is all.

Great night. Well done to both medallist. Certainly can't be questioned for effort or desire.
For all the criticism of RTE their coverage and analysis is brilliant and entertaining. Gillick is a star, his enthusiasm is infectious. Jess Barr very good and of course marmite Kiernan is a stalwart. Like Dumphy you can love him or hate him, often at the same time, but if he wasn't there you'd miss him.

For sure. All very good. Gillick's interviewing is excellent. Jessie had very good insight and is very natural in front of the camera. Jerry is a crank but you've got to love him. His complete upfrontness and zero filter is hilarious at times. Peter Collins does a decent job at mediating the whole thing.

George Hamilton on the commentary really is the weak link. Get in somebody that knows athletics and you have a solid team there. He really is clueless at times, despite having covered Athletics for God knows how many years. Dennehy or Feidhlim on the commentary would be class.

Ya he is poor. He isn't a good commentator on any sport really and the 2 you mention would be brilliant in fact I'd say they would be revolutionary. They are a breath of fresh air on social media. A commentator doesn't need to know everything so long as the don't pretend to know what they don't which is George's failing.

BBC commentary actually has me getting annoyed with Muir nearly. They had her with it won on the first lap and last lap was a victory lap. Spoiling a great run from her.

But they weren’t wrong, BBC are always going to do that.

    Get it right, lad!
It's actually 'You're a fffin wand!!!'. You use 'an' when the subsequent word has a vowel sound and you use 'a' when the next word starts with a consonant sound. So to be clear it should be: Walshb: 'You're a fffin wand!!!'.

Delighted for English and Mageean. Very well deserved. With both of them, you still feel that there's the potential for just a little bit more, so hopefully they get that shot to build on these podiums.

fffin is effin to me, hence ‘an.’

    Anyway,

Glad someone else on my level..

Should be: "Anyway, glad someone else is on my level."
You didn't make the grammar podium, I'm afraid.

Glad i watched it on BBC not that RTE rubbish.
Although you do have to listen to the BBC go on and on about their own.

I put a bet on spain for the mens relay was very exciting stuff. I also bet on Babayev in the triple jump.

Overall it was a great weekend of athletics. Lewandowski giving Jakob a good lesson was savage.

I love the ingerbritsen brothers but that finish from Lewandowski was increible. 51 seconds for the last 400. I wonder what Jacob would do different, he would possibly have to run for a good time from the gun and hope he's burned Lewandowski out but after so many races he might of burned out himself

Great to see two medals for Ireland and stuff to build on. :)

He definetely had to go faster, he ran the first 800 at close to his 5k pace. Lewandowski was going to be favourite off that. At the least, I think he should have pushed on alot earlier. He got caught off gaurd jogging by Lewandowski's attack and left him get in front before lifting the pace. Even off a slow pace, he can't let a guy with Lewandowski's pace attack and get out front on the straights like that. Have to atleast make him work around the outside of the bends.

I think he was spent. He had 4 tough races in not much more than 48 hours. 2 of those jammed into 3 hours on Friday. He's only 18 trying to do what more seasoned and mature athletes failed to do. He gave it a good go but when he needed that spurt 2 laps out he came up slightly short but gold and silver is a great return for someone so young.

Ah no, I agree with what you and IT are saying, it was always going to be tough to do that double and tiredness was surely an issue but I don't think he was tactically on point either. Lewandowski is a World class 800m runner(1:43 800 best) and I think he would have won that kind of race whether Jakob was fresh or not. A guy like Lewandowski probably has 46/47 400 speed. And with the first 800m going out in 2:06, Jakob was always going to be in trouble.

I see Ciara wasn't with Mark English at the airport. Is she based in Manchester?

There is a huge amount of goodwill towards her which is great to see. She's had her ups and downs but that was a definite up yesterday.

Yeah, she based in Manchester with Steve Vernon.

I probably should add here but probably will get slated for it is that Jakob is no ordinary 18 year old athlete, he has been training professionally since he was 11 and is much farther along the line physically than other 18 year olds. As his father Gjert said, Jakobs prime will be his late teens and early 20's because he trained harder and younger than his brothers. I love the Ingebritsen's and think they are brilliant for the sport but Jakob is already close to his physical peak right now. He's a huge talent still and can mix it up with the big boys and it will be unreal to see how he progresses from here on but he already is a seasoned athlete with tons of Championship experience.*ducks for cover*

I think it's already happened with the huge fan base they have built up that they will become immune to anything percieved as negative. You can see Gjert throwing his weight around and threatening EAA after Filip's DQ.

All I'm saying is that Lewandowski deserves a hell of alot of credit for the moves he made in that final and Jakob made mistakes that played right into his hands.

Absolutely Lewandowski deserves credit. It was a super run from him regardless of circumstance. There was a 'don't write me off' defiance to it that great champions have. Fatigue plays a big part in decision making under pressure and Lewandowski took full advantage of whateved tactical failing there was on Jakobs behalf. It was a very close race between two top class competitors.
It will be interesting to see how Jakobs career develops from here considering how much has been packed into his teenage years which are eventful even without a top class sports life. Early burn out is surely a risk.

Sticking to the super serious stuff, I did a short report here on the media 60m race for anyone interested.

3 of us Irish in the top 5, with Gillick taking his third European title with a 7.44. :pac:

I'd like to think we kept the track warm for English and Mageean's exploits to come later that day! :)

    That you running 7.95?

I’d get a recheck on that time. Looked in the very low 7s....

    Flying!
