Garda Vetting For a GAA club

I've been asked to help out at the local GAA club, my 5yr old has started there. This involves me having to be vetted by the Guards.

I have a drug conviction for selling some hash to a friend 20years ago and got a conviction for it.

I recently did the freedom of information thing where a person can find what the Gardaí have on them in their records. Nothing came back for this bar a couple of minor things where I've had bikes robbed on me and reported it.

Nothing came back about the conviction. I included as many addresses as I could remember and would be putting the same ones down for the Vetting.

If this is going to come back as a Fail, I'd rather know beforehand so I could just come up with an excuse not to help out so as not to have the club go though the vetting procedure and for it to come back as a fail and for them to wonder why and for rumours to spread.

    Anyone any experience of this?
Does the club get back why you failed or does the club get back the results and make up their own mind?

A single conviction of that age should be spent now - not sure how that impacts vetting but for many legal purposes it basically no longer exists

In athletics, the results of the vetting go to someone in Athletics Ireland, and they decide if you are a pass or a fail. I don't know if that 20 year old conviction would show up - my guess is it would - if it does, it would be up to the person in Athletics Ireland to decide if it is disqualifying or not.

The local club doesn't get details of the garda vetting. You are told if you pass or fail, and you present your acceptance letter to the club. If you fail your club will not be told why.

The process for the GAA is explained here
    https://www.gaa.ie/the-gaa/child-welfare-and-protection/vetting

You could write to that evetting@gaa.ie from an anonymous account and ask them if your conviction would be disqualifying.

    thank you for the replies

The first answer is interesting regarding the conviction being spent after that length of time - what's this based on, is the a time period where stuff just dissapears from the record?

RayCun, thanks for the good suggestion

One offence of certain types - most standard drug ones are include - is considered spent after 7 years from the date it becomes effective assuming you complied with the sentence. Multiple minor road traffic and public order offences can be considered spent under the same time frame.

Can't find any info on how its treated for vetting for this type of voluntary work, some details about for employment here: http://www.citizensinformation.ie/en/employment/employment_rights_and_conditions/data_protection_at_work/garda_clearance_for_employees.html
