    Hi Guys,

    Looking for some advise I'm in the market for a "new" well new to me motor. I was looking at the Golf for simple reason my son who is just learning will be using it also (he's 17) and the insurance doesn't look too bad.

    So criteria are;

    Golf Size - second car is an estate so plenty of room when needed
    Petrol - work from home so mileage is low
    Cheap to run
    Relatively cheap on insurance
    Not an "old mans car - as I've been told by said young lad
    Nat a "boy racer" car - as I've told him

    Budget would be 12-15K

    Any advice welcome,

    Cheers,
    LD.

    Not exactly short for competitors in that section. Focus, Leon, Astra, i30, ect. ect.

    My personal favourite is possibly the Mazda 3

    Leaf is automatic, I'm assuming they'll want to get a manual so that the son can practice in a manual for when he sits his test.

    One thing to check on the newest 1.2tsi engine is the timing belt interval. Not sure if the service books are updated, but it's been suggested that VW have shortened the recommended intervals from 60k to 40k miles. Otherwise I believe it's a nice engine.

    The interval on the 1.2 is 210k kms the same as the newer TDI's.

    Yes I believe your right. But I think that they reduced it due to issues with some belts or tensioners. Can't say for certain, only VW could clarify.
