Rugged watch for elderly father

Hi folks,
Looking for watch suggestions for my father. He's in his 70s now but still actively farming and doing diy projects. He has a 'good' watch for good wear but his day to day watch is falling to pieces. His main requirements would be being able to see the time easily..low maintenance so an automatic would be out. He wouldn't be up for setting time etc. Something that can take the wear and tear of being out and about. Wouldn't want anything expensive. Simple and rugged top of the list

Suggest a very simple throw away Casio F19W.

If anyone suggests a gshock ignore them IMo. Most are far to big to be comfortable and useful when doing a wide variety of farm work.

What 893 said. You can't go wrong with a Casio F19W. I would recommend a G-Shock, but only the models like the original. As himself said the rest are too big and expensive with it and the Casio F19W is pretty similar to the original G anyway.

Anything with hands? Don't think he's ever worn a digital watch

Despite being rugged, I do not recommend G-Shock digital watches for an elderly person. The digits are quite small on the majority of models, which can be a problem for anyone who needs reading glasses.

For same reason I don't recommend the F91W mentioned above. Great cheap watch but smallish digits.

Pro Trek tend to have large digits, or even some of the cheap regular Casio models.

I've had a few timex like this, and I would think they are not solid in the slightest. And they are also the loudest watch I have ever come across. You have to pull out the crown to stop it if you leave it in the bedroom at night they're so loud.

If you're in the cheap and cheerful range you simply cannot beat:

Strictly speaking it is only water resistant, but I'd bet money it would survive a lot. I have one and it takes showers and such just fine. Really there are a lot of watches that fit the bill, (including G-Shock...) there will be some personal taste. But the above is about as cheap as you can get and will survive an awful lot.

They're not specifically rugged. I'm sure they will scratch and chip if worn hard. But they're cheap so...
It's going to be hard to get a watch which ticks every box.

Regarding the F91W above, there is a newish, larger take on this model, the W217H. The digits are close to twice the size.




The W218 I posted above is just a ruggedized version of the W217 - exact same LCD module.

My dad has one of these and loves it. I would go with something similar and not a digital.
It's easy to read in all lights.
Has all the information you need.
Easy to set and easy to remember how to set.
Has a light.

Not sure how tough it is. I wouldn't go with a digital as they're more awkward to set.

I got a Casio G2900 and it's excellent, especially for the large display



Don't bother new, lots of good ones second hand in eBay

Or if it needs to have hands get teh Casio MRW 200H it's only 14 pounds in Amazon and comes in a load of colours and styles. Plus it's all rubber so can easily wash her under the tap to clean of the cow ****e

I've been using these for livestock farming and general mechanic spanner-twirling for decades at this stage, and the only reason I've ever had to get a new one was because the face got so badly damaged it was difficult to read, and in one infamous instance, I melted one with the oxy/acetylene set

When they get too stinky/greasy, easily washed in hot soapy water.

I wanted a cheap watch for cycling and swimming. Also working and taking knocks.

I have the W-218H-1AVEF I didn't love it. I found off angles the LCD wasn't fantastic. Also had the
MRW-200H and that was impossible to see in poor light, no lume. I'm at the point needing reading glasses and I found these a bit too small.

I ended up with the G-Shock GD350-8 with positive display and vibration alarm. Was looking for vibration alert. I find this much easier to see and much more comfortable because of the better strap. Its a bit bulkier but not as big as the bigger G-Shocks. Most of the ones here are the negative display though I didn't want that.

The classic basic Casio M5610 has a great display. Much better than the cheaper Casio's. It's only about €100

I'd have preferred an analogue face also. But wanted the vibe alarm.

Anyway that's my 2 cents..

I have one of these for years as a gardening/diy etc watch and has taken dogs abuse, if I look closely there's a couple of scratches on the crystal but that's it.

Too many!!! Mid may ..wish I could get it over earlier as have a confirmation April 5th and bought a matching suit for the watch

I picked up the Mrw-200 last summer just as a cheap watch to have for holiday's and really like I wear it a lot more than I thought I would. Only €17 in argos at the minute too. It's cheap plastic resin and light but it's well made and finished. It's probably the most legible dial I own. Used to wear my Orange monster nearly 24/7 but I want to mind it a bit more and save it for the weekends along with my dressier watches. I wear the casio now if I doing any sort of physical work. Got a Gsteel 2 weeks ago though that has hardly left left my wrist so the Mrw may be saved for the really dirty work now where it may actually get damaged.



Really like that Casio marlin too must pick up one at some point.
