I have a friend who got a 2 year driving ban. The ban is up in early May 2019. His licence is a UK license, does anyone know if he can still exchange it for an Irish license before the Brexit deadline?
    TIA

Unlikely that he can as he will not be in possession of the licence until the ban is completed. However he can still change after Brexit.

Someone from the RSA was on the radio & said that UK licenses can't be swapped for Irish ones after Brexit & that, if you are resident in Ireland you must have an Irish license.

    Is this true ?

Yes if resident in Ireland for over 185 days you are supposed to exchange your UK for Irish license.

I can see UK registered cars being seized left right and centre after Brexit..

There's select countries where they can be swapped from, currently all EU countries and 15 other countries. The UK would cease to be an EU country after Brexit so unless they were added to the 15 other counties you won't be able to swap it.

No you're not. There is no obligation on anyone in possession of an EU licence to exchange their license.

Only in the event of a no deal brexit as per

    https://www.ndls.ie/news/149-brexit-update.html

AA spokesman is quoted as saying in the event of a no deal brexit the government have discussed a "patch" to allow UK drivers to continue to drive here.

Can you show me that in writing? Not doubting you just want to see the proof..

Actually you're wrong. Just checked the NDLS website..

As a visitor to Ireland you can drive on a driving licence from any state outside the EU/EEA for up to a year provided the driving licence is current and valid. However on taking up 'normal residence' in Ireland you must either exchange your driving licence or apply for a driving licence in Ireland. You are considered to be normally resident in Ireland if, because of personal and occupational ties, you usually live here for at least 185 days in each calendar year.

I was right, but mistaken on the number of days.. it's actually 185.. not 100.

Section on EU licenses. You can drive as long as you want on an EU licence as long as that licence is valid.

Throw up an old link there.. I can see no mention of normal residence on that page.

    My read on this......
(If you have a driving licence issued by an EU/EEA member state you can drive in Ireland as long as your existing licence is valid)....
IF UK crash out of EU/EEA then it will no longer be a member state resulting in....
(Where a driving licence has been issued on foot of an exchange from a country that Ireland does not have an exchange agreement with then Ireland cannot exchange the driving licence.) until something is put in place to allow UK citizens to apply for exchange....

    AHH!!!!................
Did'nt spot the "normal residency" bit........

Recognised states are not EU countries.

Been driving here 15 yrs on a UK licence without a problem, a lot of speculation on what will happen after Brexit,
will wait and see on what needs to be done, im not going to panic.

I think it's highly irresponsible of the RSA if they are stating incorrect information.

It wouldn't be the first time they've been completely wrong in fairness.
