Is my cockapoo actually a poodle?

    Hi all.

I'm working seeing if anyone who has good knowledge of dogs could help me determine if my 5 month old cockapoo is actually a poodle.

I saw his mother and she was a white standard poodle. Now that he has been groomed, I can't see any cocker in him at all!

He is extremely intelligent and agile and walks just like a poodle. He's taller than any other cockapoo I've seen but I always put that down to the mother being standard. I never saw the father because he was so cute I didn't care!

The vet and groomer didn't say anything about it. Pictures of before and after grooming. She left the hair on his belly because he'd look scrawny other wise.

    Thanks!

To me he looks like a cross breed. The problem is that these breeders do not use great examples of their relevant breed so you never really know what you are going to get or which parent they will take after.

His colour & ear length suggest some Cocker in the mix. His coat is Poodle like so I'd guess a cross between the two.

Brother in law has one that looks almost identical. Probably just takes a little more after the mother. Lovely dog though.

To me he doesn't look totally like a poodle, even after grooming, and with the longer fur you can definitely see the cocker mix. If someone wanted to sell him to me as a purebred poodle I'd probably be a bit sceptical.

    He's very cute though!

Those ears, plus the softness of his coat, say spaniel to me.

I have a couple of cockapoos and I’m pretty sure your dog is one. His height is probably down to the fact that the father wasn’t a miniature poodle. Whatever he is it doesn’t matter ,he’s lovely.

The third picture says it all really, no way that's a pure poodle.

Bone structure, size of the head and paws, the ears, beautiful dog.

Definitely not a poodle. Bit of terrier in there too, Glen of imaal perhaps. Not seeing much if any cocker.

Who knows. Lovely dog regardless, doesn't matter what he is.

Definitely not a pure bred poodle.

He still has a lot of maturing to do. His ears and the loose coat would suggest a spaniel/poodle mix to me.
    Hes gorgeous

These 'designer breeds' are basically cross breeds... there is no FIXED/DEFINITE outcome when you cross two breeds - even puppies from the same littler can be very different. When you cross two breeds, the qualities/personality/traits of one parent can be dominant over those of the other parent, sometimes to the extent that one breeds traits/qualities arent apparent at all! A neighbour has a JUG  (Jack Russell/Pug cross) - hes so Pug, you wouldnt know there was JRT in him at all. A friend has 2 Labradoodles from same parents, different litters - hard to believe they are related at all...
