We've had Queen in Bohemian Rhapsody, which also featured a cameo by U2

Now the Elton John's Rocketman is coming out.

What other Live Aid bands deserve the biopic treatment??

They didn't play at the event (snubbed by Geldof) so slightly off topic but I sincerely hope there will be a Thin Lizzy biopic some day.

    I mean, it's got everything.

Eh? It was roundly panned. They blamed Collins.

They should do a doco on how all the fighter jets it paid for we're used and where they are now

While there have been several Who based films, none has been a proper biography, that could be quite good taking in the whole 60 'Mod' scene and the origins of some of the songs.

I'm somewhere in that movie, about 20 metres away from the stage snapping away with my camera - this is one of the 550 photos I took that day

I don't care. There's some great bands mentioned but biopics are such smaltzly propaganda.

Would prefer to see a good documentary than another biopic. Bohemian Rhapsody was very entertaining and well worth watching but so much was just left out.

Led Zeppelin's set at Live Aid was the greatest load of shyte of all time. I have never heard worse to this day and I include pissed pub bands in that. I'll never forget Robert Plant murdering Rock And Roll. One of my favourite bands of all time but that performance was just diabolical.

Can we not do away with this cinematic universe bollix? It's just tired and derivative at this stage.

Camera? Lens? Do you have a flicker or whatever with all this lot on it would love to see it. It would be a great thread in the photo forum - concert of the century.

    Olympus OM10, Tamron Adaptall 200mm, plus 2 x convertor

Saving the best for the book:p. There's a random film photography thread over in Photography with a selection of Live Aid and other concerts I took the camera to

Here's a panoramic shot of the stage as I was moving towards the exit (had to catch a late train back to Leeds)

I also managed to get photos of the Stones in Leeds in 1982, Bowie in Milton Keynes in 1983 (and Manchester later in that decade), Elton John in Leeds in 1984, AC/DC in Manchester in 1982 and 1986, Queen in Freddie's last concert with them at Knebworth in 1986, the Human Rights Now Concert at Wembley in 1988 (amongst others) - have a decade of photographic memories from the 1980s

    Pau (Too) Young.

The film follows Paul as he tries to buy cigarettes, get served in a pub and rent a raunchy VHS tape - getting refused each time due to his age.

Ah Beasty- there's a book in it- not just the photos but the stories too around attending the particular gigs- I mean, how many people brought an SLR to concerts in the 80s? Even in the early 2000's I was chased around a Bob Dylan concert in Nowlan Park in Kilkenny by "security types" when i brought my Canon SLR with a zoom lens- I took "refuge" by going up to a Guard :P- I have to laugh considering any crappy mobile phone today would probably have taken better photos- but back then I was classed as some sort of paparazzi :D

Yes, he was a late bloomer at just under 30 in term of 80's music success but still a big hit with a female teenage fanbase. I think Elvis Costello was the male teenage fanbase equivalent?

It's pretty much written already, and there are plenty of stories within it. Used to smuggle the camera body typically round my back. The long lens fitted neatly into a thermos flask (with it's inner section removed). Was at the front for Alice Cooper at Manchester Apollo one evening, snapping away with b&w film. He gave me a few funny looks when I was back the following night, this time with colour negatives. Was nearly through the first film when the crowd parted to my left. There was a burly security guard beckoning me with his finger, and of course I had to oblige. He asked for the film and then exposed it there and then... Still, I had my first evening's memories!

Well, I still think you're doing yourself an injustice.80- 95% of people going to concerts in the 80's didn't bring a camera, and those that did, didn't have an SLR with a zoom lens- and even then, most didn't attend live-aid.

It's up to you, but I think you're too close to it all- take a step back for a minute. I know that Live-Aid was global- I watched it on TV as it happened- but what's out there, in terms of that gig, and gigs in the 80's like you've shown us all, from fans perspectives with an SLR and some quality B&W production? not much I'd say.

    Just say'in- I'd buy your book. :)

That photo of Concorde was taken just before Young (who's a bit older then ma) was joined by Alf (who was a bit younger!, but probably looks as young now as she did back then!):

    Speaking of the Concorde.

Boy George believe it or not, would have been arguably one of the biggest stars at the time that appeared in the Live Aid Video almost missed it, he was New York, Geldof rang him, fooked him out of it and told him get his arsé onto a Concorde which he did. They had never actually met before then.

By the time he got there everyone had gone home, AFAIK he is only in solo shots in the video.

Never linked her with Yazoo and the hit "Only You" until a few years after her solo hits as Alison Moyet- doh! I knew I knew her from "somewhere" at the time, but back in the day, a lot of 80's bands and singers just transformed from one band to another very quickly and there was no internet there to find out.

She was a "backing track" to Eastenders in the early years of that soap- they always used to play the latest and greatest UK hits on that show when it started in 85 or 6 as background music in Den and Angie's pub. So great memories of her- "All Cried Out" appeared regularly at the time.

Well I've pictures of everyone who performed at Wembley. Nearly drew a line at Spandeau Ballet, as I didn't want to waste my precious negatives, but still took a handful of them

    Anyway, back to the Quo
    473890.jpg473891.jpg

Had seen them previously in Manchester

    473892.jpg

And subsequently at Knebworth supporting Queen (Freddie's last performance with them)

Any "source" to that? Not questioning you, just curious. Certainly BG is only seen alone in the video (in terns of the rest of the stars on the track) but the perspective for Young, Le-Bon Bono etc when they're singing their solo parts are all similar. Only curious- if true story, happy to believe it as you've posted. :)

Erm...I took this to be a joke because their set was notoriously awful. Nobody else seems to have

That and Bob Dylan's contribution were two great low-points of the concert. In fact, most contributions by the USA contingent paled compared to the UK concert.

To be honest with you, I can't remember where I saw it. It was most probably on BBC4 who have some cracking documentaries, it could have even been a Doc about Concorde itself.

But Rolling Stones below seems to confirm the jist of my memory.

    https://www.rollingstone.com/music/music-news/the-making-of-band-aid-secrets-and-stories-from-the-star-studded-session-172815/
Boy George almost missed the recording session entirely.
Boy George: Culture Club had just done a show at Madison Square Garden, and I was in bed at the Plaza hotel. I got a call at three o’clock in the morning from Bob Geldof, whom I’d never met.

Ure: We had to have him. So Bob woke him up in New York. George said, “Who’s there?” Bob said, “Every ****er but you. Get your ass on Concorde.” And he did – at his own expense, I might add.

George: When I arrived, around eight o’clock in the evening, there was no time to practice or maybe have a go at the song to make sure you’re in the right key. It was literally: “You’re on!” I was thinking, “Oh my God, what’s going to come out of my mouth?”

While you can watch a lot of it on Youtube it's a great DVD package - wouldn't sell it - once every few years on a miserable Winter's day- it's a nice memory to look back on.

I think Phil Collins got the blame for that performance- in reality it was a number of issues- two drummers for start didn't help along with "under the weather" guitarist and singer :D
