My wife was working full time, not she is studying full time & because she was working part time she only gets half a grant. Lately she has been sick so unable to work & is signed off until at least the end of March. I am on a VTOS payment.
We are barely getting through week by week. If we were to get an unexpected bill we would not be able to pay.
Is there any help we can look for to tied us over short term?

If she’s sick and unable to work and she has enough PRSI contributions then she can apply for illness benefit.

If your GP says she’s not fit for work then that’s the only issue.

Illness benefit sounds like the way to go to me, her gp must sign her off on this, it can be claimed for up to 2 years, she will have to collect weekly certificates from her gp, to present them to your local welfare office, they may become monthly after sometime, if her illness persists. Best of luck

    Thanks for the info.
Was thinking I.B. but wasn't sure. Theres no problem with getting the doctor to sign her off. She just got a note from him to tell her employer that she is not fit to work
Will be going into INTREO later just wanted to hear other peoples thoughts before going

For illness benefit you go to your GP. He/she has the application forms. GP completes their part and you complete the rest. Then you post it off. There’s no point in going to intreo.

OK so we applied for illness benefit, this is the 3rd week & have heard nothing back
Does anyone know how long it usually takes?
Is there anyway to speed up the process?
We are struggling at the moment
Was told the community welfare officer might be able to help, is this true?

Are you sending in her certs every week?
Yes you can go to the CWO to ask for a SWA. You need to bring evidence of any other income or savings you have.

Yeah the certs have been sent in but have heard nothing back yet
We have no kids & I receive a vtos payment could we still get SWA?
Sorry for all the questions but we have never been in this situation before

You’ll only know if you make an appointment with the CWO and speak to him or her.
