I got a letter today saying I’ve been turned down for invalidity on the basis that I’m not permanently disabled. (I thought you only had to prove that your condition would last for a year or more?) Am I better off looking for a review or an appeal. I’m not really sure what the difference is.

A review only involves them re-examining the documentation that you've already sent in to see has any administrative error been made.

An appeal would include the above, plus it enables you to send in any additional information you may have plus it allows you to ask for a personal hearing.

So it's generally better to appeal and ask for a personal hearing.

Should you not have applied for disability allowence

"Invalidity Pension is a weekly payment to people who cannot work because of a long-term illness or disability and are covered by social insurance (PRSI). At 66, you transfer automatically to the State Pension (Contributory) at the full rate. Invalidity Pension is taxable. You are entitled to a Free Travel Pass. You may also get extra social welfare benefits, for example, the Household Benefits Package"

I have a long term illness. Inflammatory arthritis. I know exactly why I got turned down. For some unknown reason my GP ticked the box on the form to say I’d recover within 12 months.

Considering both are difficult to get by the sounds of it the doctor doesn't believe your sick enough if he /she didn't make a mistake ,

My consultant and OT do though, so I’m hoping letters from them will outweigh what GP said
