Couple of weeks ago I applied for a job that was advertised. I got a response after sending my CV, something along the lines of we get alot of CVs and you may not be selected. I have what they are looking for. I had my CV professionally looked at.

And they are advertising again. What did I do wrong?

You didnt necessarily do anything wrong they just didnt select you for either the original interview or the job, it happens hundreds of times a day I wouldnt take it to heart just keep applying for jobs you are suited to and you will get there eventually

I have what they are looking for.

You don't have what they are looking for. It's as simple as that.

A job isn't as simple as ticking all the boxes. It's about you as a person. You're probably not what they want.

Weird thing with having CVs 'professionally looked at' is that in some cases they actually make things worse from my experience. During the unfortunate time I was unemployed I was signed up to one of these groups who looked over my CV and when I got it back it had a plethora of ridiculous buzzwords attached.

I threw it in the bin and continued on with my old CV and got more responses with that than their idea of what employers are looking for.

Not much help OP but just keep at it, this job wasn't for you but the next one might be.

    Don’t take it personally.
Lots of companies don’t send PFO letters.

I’ve even seen potentially successful cvs rooted out early to protect someone internally who’s been promised the position.

When on a large campaign We used to electronically scan cvs for key words, if you didn’t use these your cv wasn’t even read by a human.

Some people do first and second interviews and don’t even hear back

    Don’t take it to heart.

so, do you think you are the only person who was able to tick those boxes? how many positions are available?

this is the nature of jobseeking. if i got more than a form email from all the places i applied to that i ticked all their prerequisites... well, I'd have a lot more just than a bunch of form emails in my inbox. it sucks but that's how it is.

you have to realize also that besides the fact that numbers are not usually stacked in your favor, ie: 100-200 apply for 1 job, some of these companies just put out ads all the time to 'see what's out there', and if they buy ad space regularly in bulk on these job sites they basically spam the crap out of them with their ads because it's like a PR move - keeps their name out there, competition thinks they're doing well and expanding, etc

or, they just didn't like any of the applications they got. you could always apply again if you want. perhaps try a different approach in your cover letter than you did last time. i get a sense from your posts you perhaps haven't yet grasped the nuances of professional communication/decorum. just ticking a few boxes doesn't entitle you to be contacted. and it seems like every employer now expects to be bowled over by how super enthusiastic, dedicated, committed, loyal, team/hard working you can be while you multitask in a fast paced environment. they expect you to not just tick the few boxes they give, you need to use your own initiative and draw your own boxes, tick them as well, and then use them to build sustainable housing for homeless children if you even want to get your foot in the door. for jobs that won't even pay enough for you to rent a 1 BR flat on your own.

There's either something about your CV they didn't like, or they never got your CV.

For example, Jobs.ie screen all job applications and reject up to 50% of them, so it's possible, if you applied via Jobs.ie, that your application didn't even make it to them.

It's also possible it went in their spam.

    Can I ask:

Your conversation style is a little peculiar. Are you a non-native speaker? Was this an IT role?

So they got to see me as a person through my CV?

change your cv and apply again.

a lot of times the cvs get prescreened by software and if you have too many buzz words or phrases from their job spec, it actually goes against you.

You only applied a couple of weeks ago, the recruitment process can take months especially in the large multinationals.
When was the closing date for application?
Depending on the number of applicants it could take months for them to just go through the applications, then they will have to organize interviews, aptitude tests etc.
    So don't panic just yet.

Don't take offence, they may have received hundreds of cvs for the position.

Well at least they let you know from the off that the process may not go any further, which is actually a substantial professional step above the practice of some, who just won't send any feedback whatsoever.

My guess would be that they simply received a huge amount of CVs which matched the search criteria, and they simply could not feasibly interview everyone. If a lot of others applied then they may have just taken the first x CVs, and decided to proceed with them.

OP, I've been involved in screening applications for interview. I've seen CV's that seem to tick all the boxes but I hated the way the person wrote their cover letter, or how they bigged themselves up too much, or had spelling mistakes or grammar issues. When you get 70+ applications for a 2 day part time role (as an example), you have to use whatever you can to whittle down applications to a manageable number.

We advertised for a research assistant post a while back. A masters was desirable but a degree was the base. We got 1-15 applications from people with really relevant PHDs. So while you may have 'what they're looking for' someone might have what they're looking for and much, much more.

You could always contact them and ask for feedback on your application, but be aware that might annoy them even more and if you apply again, you could easy get blocked because of it. It sucks but that's where we're at.

As part of my roles in the past I have been responsible for recruitment. We saw lots of CVs for every role advertised, and although some of them seemed to tick all of our boxes we had to reject a lot of them for reasons candidates would never have realised were an issue for us. Examples include people living in the local areas of our clients, previously working for a client, previously working for companies we did not rate, gaps in CVs that were explained using reasons we did not rate, spurious courses listed as achievements, over qualified, know it all attitude in either the cover letter or CV...and they are the ones I can think of right now, there were plenty more.

It's so hard to know. Too many buzz words and it goes against you. Despite being told to actually use the buzz words in the job specification. Head wrecking really.

What was your cover letter like?
