Boards vs Facebook

Here in After Hours, people present a lot of strong opinions, especially on current affairs. Some people have thousands of posts.

Do you get involved in similar discussions in more public online forums like Facebook and Twitter, or do you only post anonymously?

Do you feel you can be more honest/ outspoken here because you don't have your friends and family seeing everything you post?

Do many of your friends/ family know your Boards handle/ would you worry if someone you knew figured out who you were?

I'm interested because occasionally I get into discussions beneath news stories on facebook and I always feel a bit stupid after knowing my connections have seen me get drawn into something again... yet the likelihood is many of them are posting here or on Reddit.

What are these faceBooks and tweeters you mention? Are they discussion forums?

So many other questions, that I struggle to answer.

It’s ok, the old lad here is the same.

It's only common sense and good manners that you should vary your behaviour depending on who you're speaking to.

I dislike when people get political among friends on Facebook, because it's not the platform for it. It''s a bit rude towards people who just want to check up on their friends. Nobody cares about your opinion on the Fiscal Space.

But I'd have no hesitation discussing politics on Facebook pages dedicated to political discussion, just the same as on Boards or Twitter, where that kind of debate is characteristic of the site.

An elderly aunt (who isn't on Facebook) often goes on about shirkers and free houses when I meet her, and I barely even protest anymore, because I see her three times a year and I know she's just looking to rant. Plus, there's her will to think about.

I lost interest in facebook ages ago. I always saw Facebook/Bebo as a fun thing. A place for you to chat with friends/share stories/etc and not have a big debate.
I'd be fairly open with my family/friends about my views on most things I post here. I'm not into falling out with people for having a different view about something. I hate this being out to get somebody/destroy them because of a view they might have.
There is the odd thing that they mightn't know about that I've posted about here but if they found out it wouldn't make much of a difference.
They don't know my user name but it's easy enough to figure out. The also don't care about it!

You have to be very careful what you say in public these days.

Facebook police put me in jail for a month for posting tits with nipples. I appealed it and lost, apparently as long as no nipples are on show it’s kosher.

Think the difference is that on Facebook, you're mostly talking to people you know. I've had a couple of 'debates' with people in groups that I'm a member of but mostly try to keep it light. Actually mostly try that here too but it doesn't always work :D

I'd be very wary of discussing things on fb.

A few years ago, one of the local simpletons was persecuted for views he expressed online by a local activist. He ended up leaving the country to escape the hassling I believe.

I tend to stick to forums like this one and stay away from Twitter, Facebook and You Tube for the most part. But not at all because of the anonymity. I do it because it is moderated in something vaguely approximating real time.

There is no minimum standard of civility enforced on those platforms really - and where and when it is it takes so long to kick in to effect that any useful conversation is derailed long before. It becomes a cess pool of hate where there is no way I am going to wade into a conversation and come out a richer more informed person for it.

And for all the tongue in cheek humour and relative inanity of after hours - I have conversations here that do enrich me. Even if I go into a debate and feel I totally destroyed the other person - I still very often come away from it thinking I got _something_ useful from them while I did it. If they destroy me even more so.

Being anonymous has no interest to me really. It is not the primary concern around where I post - and where I do not.
